A Yellow Dog from the Caucasus

The History of the Golden Retriever

Once upon a time, (1858) there was a young British nobleman who assisted at a circus show in the seaside town of Brighton, on the South coast of England. ART: MAGIC FEMINISM: The Georgian Artist Eteri Chkadua

by Ilka Scobie (artnet.com)

Eteri Chkadua, Sept. 11-Oct. 29, 2005, at Danny Simmons’ Corridor Gallery, 334 Grand Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11238

Paintings by Eteri Chkadua 1 2 3 4 5

Eteri Chkadua’s intense figurative paintings, currently on view at Danny Simmons’ Corridor Gallery in Brooklyn, are well worth a trip across the bridge. Simmons is, of course, an artist, author, collector and Fort Greene resident, and has established a nicely appointed gallery adjoining his living space, which is in itself a mini-museum of African tribal art and African American art and photography.

IN GEORGIA, PRESERVING THE PAST IS CAUSE FOR CONTROVERSY
By Molly Corso 6/08/07 (EurasiaNet)

At first glance, Tbilisi’s picturesque tumbledown mansions might seem small cause for controversy. But a government plan to preserve Georgia’s architectural heritage, as embodied in these buildings, could prove a key test of how far ordinary Georgians are willing to go with the country’s gung-ho reform initiatives.

Ancient monastery ignites modern-day feud in Caucasus
Posted on Donnerstag, 3. Mai 2007 (EST)

Perched high on a cliff side in the remote borderlands of eastern Georgia, the ancient Davit Gareji monastery hardly seems the kind of place that could be at the centre of a modern-day diplomatic dispute.

Best viewed large.

Stitching of 9 images using autostitch, ptstitcher and enlend in Hugin.Davit Gareja is a complex of monsateries carved out in as caves in a large desert. Monasteries are kilometers away from each other and were established in the 6th century by a Syrian monk David. This particular view is from the most visited Lavra monastery of the complex. David himself is buried in the monastery.

Red stripes on rolls is clay with rocks sandwiching it. Darker spots in the back seem like shadows from clouds, but they are actuallly burnt grass. There is limited vegitation around monasteries and rivers that dry up in the summer.

It is an amazing site. Here is the wikipedia entry: Davidgareja.

WHY NOT? Entwicklungshilfegutachtenv ...
