I will stay in the Caucasus next time ...

In den kommenden zwei Wochen werde ich im Kaukasus unterwegs sein. Dann wird hier nicht viel passieren. Einzige Voraussetzung, dass vielleicht doch etwas veröffentlicht wird, ist wohl ein Internet-Cafè. Oder bei Hans Heiner Buhr (www.kaukasus-reisen.de) besteht sicher auch eine Möglichkeit. Dort oder besser über ihn bin ich auch zu erreichen (siehe Banner).

Ab dem 8. September 2006 werden wir für zwei Wochen in Georgien sein. Der Künstler Jörg Herold (Galerie Eigen+Art), seine Frau Jackie Richard (Journalistin) und ich wollen erste Recherchen einer "Dokumentararchäologie im Kaukasus" betreiben. Dabei fanden wir gerade zum Kaukasus beachtliches Material. Da die Zeit zu knapp ist, haben wir beschllossen, dieses Jahr erst mal eine gelassene Reise zu unternehmen, um dann im nächsten Jahr diese "Reise eines Dokumentararchäologen in den Kaukasus" fortzuführen. Wir werden also nächstes Jahr noch einmal für eine längere Zeit nach Georgien fahren...

Also ihr könnt im Georgien Blog stöbern, die Archive durchwühlen, meine Linksammlung: my del.icio.us inspizieren, etwas weiter unten einen Film ansehen, oder ein paar postings down besteht die Möglichkeit Radio oder Musik hören.

A Cato ConferenceTbilisi, Georgia – October 25-27, 2006Conference Description:Fifteen years after the collapse of the Soviet Union and its empire, the nations of Eurasia are still struggling to build stable, secure, and prosperous social orders. The nations of the Confederation of Independent States and its periphery (the CIS+) have generated a variety of responses to the collapse of Soviet power, with a corresponding variety of outcomes. It is time to draw lessons for reformers and to share them with the people of the CIS+ who are working for civil society, limited government, and peace.
The Cato Institute, in close cooperation with the New Economic School of Georgia, is organizing a major international conference in October 2006 in Tbilisi, Georgia. The conference–Freedom, Commerce, and Peace: A Regional Agenda–will assemble, inform, and motivate a broad network of scholars, analysts, and policymakers who can further the mission of building free, stable, and prosperous legal, political, social, and economic orders.
The conference is tentatively scheduled to begin the evening of Wednesday, October 25 and conclude the evening of Friday, October 27 at the Sheraton Metechi Palace Hotel in Tbilisi. The Sheraton has excellent conference facilities and is accustomed to working with professional conferences. Conference papers will be presented and proceedings will be conducted in English, Georgian, and Russian. Some of them will be published later in three languages. Sessions will be webcast live on Cato.ru and archived for later viewing.

Local Democracy Agency Georgia to be opened

The Association of the Local Democracy Agency (ALDA) will open its 12th Local Democracy Agency (LDA) in Kutaisi, Georgia on 8 September 2006. It is the first LDA outside South East Europe where ALDA has been working for more than 13 years now.
The inauguration event will be held in the Electricity Company Building in Kutaisi in the presence of an international audience including journalists, local officials, representatives of the Council of Europe and other international organisations as well as all the partners of the LDA.The celebrations will be preceded by a meeting of all the partners of the new Agency on 7 September, among them the cities of Strasbourg, Nantes (France), Newport (UK), Monfalcone (Italy), the cities of Kutaisi, Tbilisi (Georgia), the NGOs ‘Centre for Social Ethics’ (Lithuania), the Georgian Association of Local Authorities NALAG, ‘Partners Georgia’ and ‘Kutaisi-Newport-Association’. They will discuss the work priorities of the new Agency and appoint a Delegate (Head) of the Agency as well as the lead partner.
The first projects of the new Agency will concentrate on human rights education, youth projects and capacity building for local authorities.

Musik aus seiner Heimat Georgien, das bedeutet für David Malazonia eine Synthese aus traditioneller Folklore - einer kunstvollen polyphonen Vokalmusik - und der arabisch-persischen Musik-Kultur der muslimischen Nachbarn; aber auch gerade westliche Einflüsse jenseits des Großen Kaukasus und zeitgenössischer Jazz finden sich in der heutigen georgischen Musik.
Georgien, ein Grenzland zwischen Europa und Asien, gelegen am Südrand des Kaukasus, befindet sich seit jeher im Spannungsfeld verschiedener Einflüsse. Im Norden grenzt es an Russland, im Süden an die Türkei und hat somit eine bedeutende verkehrsgeographische Rolle inne. Die Seidenstraße führte direkt nach Tbilisi, der Hauptstadt Georgiens. Die geographische Position Georgiens zwischen Ost und West wirkt sich auf alle Lebensbereiche aus und stellte mal Grenze mal Brücke zwischen der christlichen und moslemischen Welt, zwischen Europa und Asien dar.
Die traditionsreiche Begegnung zwischen den verschiedenen Kulturen, die in Georgien aufeinander treffen, findet beim Intuition-Debüt "First Swallow" von David Malazonia eine reizvolle Resonanz. Bezeichnend für seine Kompositionen ist nicht so sehr der Einfluss der arabisch-persischen Musik, die bis zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts besonders in den urbanen Zentren wie der Hauptstadt Tbilisi wirkte, jedoch in der heutigen georgischen Kultur an Bedeutung verlor. Viel augenfälliger ist eine kunstvoll arrangierte vokale Mehrstimmigkeit der Kompositionen. Ein polyphoner Gesang wie er für die traditionelle georgische Volksmusik kennzeichnend ist. David Malazonias komplexe Arrangements faszinieren vor allem durch eine gleichzeitig horizontale wie vertikale Entfaltung eingängiger vokaler wie instrumentaler Melodien. Neben der georgischen Polyphonie sind gerade bei den Piano-Soli David Malazonias Einflüsse des westlichen Jazz unüberhörbar. Zu den scheinbar vertrauten Jazzpatterns erklingen für den europäischen Zuhörer befremdlich ausschauende traditionelle georgische Instrumente des berühmten Duduki-Ensemble "Urmuli".
Mit dem Album "First Swallow" schafft David Malazonia eine faszinierende, eigenständige Verbindung zwischen georgischer Folklore und westlichen Jazzklängen, die Tbilisi, Hauptstadt Georgiens, als Schmelztiegel der verschiedenen Kulturen widerspiegeln vermag.

The Georgian government claims to have restored “constitutional order” in the upper Kodori Gorge -- the sole Georgia-controlled part of breakaway Abkhazia. As a result of a special operation by police and army units, the Kodori-based paramilitary group “Monadire” (Hunter) and its chieftain, Emzar Kvitsiani, have largely been neutralized (see EDM, July 25, 27, August 1). But complete success still seems a long way off.

In recent days, Georgia has launched an offensive in the Kodori Gorge, an area that straddles the breakaway region of Abkhazia and the rest of Georgia. RFE/RL Georgian Service correspondent Nino Gelashvilispoke to Matthew Bryza, U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Bryza told RFE/RL that Georgia's incursion could foster stability.

Russland hat der früheren Sowjetrepublik Georgien vorgeworfen, Streitkräfte in einen Randbezirk der abtrünnigen Teilrepublik Abchasien geschickt zu haben. Georgien bestritt, Soldaten in die Kodori-Schlucht entsandt zu haben.

(sda/afp) In einem Konvoi habe die Armee lediglich Nahrungsmittel in die Schlucht gebracht, die am Rande Abchasiens liegt, zitierte die Agentur den Kommandanten der georgischen Friedenssoldaten, Waleri Dschaparidse.
Dagegen meldete die russische Agentur Itar-Tass mit Bezug auf einen russischen Militärsprechers, russische Soldaten hätten am Montagmorgen zwei Militärkonvois mit georgischen Kennzeichen beobachtet.
