She began her project in closed, rural communities, where social rules are often more severe due to the persistence of traditional customs, peer and social pressure, tighter community control, and the regulation of women's conduct based on conservative religious values. Meet the Recipients of the 2009 Production Grant for Photographers from Central Asia, the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Mongolia, and Pakistan. In 2009, the Open Society Documentary Photography Project launched a new grant program to support photographers from Central Asia, the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Mongolia, and Pakistan. Nine photographers were selected from 6 different countries—Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Pakistan—to document social justice or human rights issues in their home countries.

In addition to awarding project funds, the program provided these photographers with two workshops in Istanbul, audio recording equipment and training, and a 6-month mentorship with world-renowned photographers Yuri Kozyrev (NOOR Images) and Antonin Kratochvil (VII Photo Agency).

The Open Society Documentary Photography Project and Arts and Culture Program announce a grant and training opportunity for documentary photographers from Central Asia, the South Caucasus, Afghanistan, Mongolia, and Pakistan. 

The grant is being offered to:

visually document issues of importance in the region; and
provide training and support to photographers from the region.
Approximately 10 cash stipends in the amount of $3,500 each will be awarded to photographers to produce a photo essay on a current human rights or social issue in the region.

Grantees will participate in two master-level workshops on visual storytelling through photography and multimedia. These workshops are led by internationally recognized photographers and industry professionals who will then provide ongoing mentorship and support throughout the six-month grant term.

The Open Society Foundations will pay travel and hotel expenses and provide a per diem to cover meals and incidentals for the workshops.

This grant is intended for photographers who are committed to pursuing a career in photography and have prior technical expertise and/or training. 

Deadline
The deadline for applying is May 10, 2012 at 5pm EST.  The grant will begin in November 2012 and end in June 2013.

History and Background
At the core of the grant program is the desire to support creative work that uses photography as a means of critically exploring current social problems. The program was created to support artists from the region who will contribute to civil society in their home countries, and when appropriate bring those issues to an international stage through longer term documentary work rather than news photography. Based on our experience with prior grant programs and workshops for photographers, grantees have the best chance for personal and professional growth through guided artistic development, project assistance, and professional education. We are also responding to a lack of affordable, advanced training programs for photographers in the region, which will enable them to compete in international markets.

We are also committed to furthering public dialogue around issues relevant to the work of the Open Society Foundations. As such, proposals will be carefully judged by Open Society Foundations staff and outside advisors to ensure that the issues are urgent and timely.

The Technical Manager works full time for the CEP's website EurasiaNet, an online magazine that posts original stories concerning political, economic and social developments in the Caucasus and
Central Asia. The Technical Manager oversees all technical aspects of the site's operation, including both the English and Russian language sections, in particular the formatting of stories and photographs for uploading on to EurasiaNet's servers, and promoting stories via web-based social networking platforms. Other responsibilities include;

Responsibilities
* Oversees all technical aspects of the site's operation, including both the English and Russian language sections, in particular the formatting of stories and photographs for uploading on to EurasiaNet's servers;
* Promotes the distribution of stories via web-based social networking platforms.
* Organization of EurasiaNet's photo archive;
* Primary point of contact between EurasiaNet, and the website's contributing editor for photography.
* Responsible for adapting the site to accommodate multi-media packages, comprising text, images and audio.
* Maintains the website as an information resource, searching for new outlets to which EurasiaNet can link, while deleting outdated links,
* Communication with partner organizations to ensure that EurasiaNet material is properly distributed according to existing arrangements.
* The Technical Manager may, on occasion, work on developing and maintaining the website of partners projects within OSI.
* Coordinating the posting of audio/visual projects.
* Proofreading.
* Maintaining the website as an information resource via links to other websites.

Qualifications
* B.A. degree.
* Solid journalism skills;
* Familiar with the Drupal content management system, as well as have thorough knowledge of HTML, XML, Photoshop, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office;
* Familiarity with Coldfusion and at least some web design skills are a plus.
* Ability to manage Microsoft Excel spreadsheets is essential.
* Experience with various social networking platforms, including Facebook and Twitter.
* knowledge of the Russian-language a plus;
* Basic familiarity with political, economic and social developments in the Caucasus and Central Asia is a plus.

OSI's Central Eurasia Project (CEP) seeks a full-time Program Officer for Central Eurasia to be based in New York, starting immediately.


Working under the supervision of OSI's Director of the CEP and Middle East Initiatives, the Program Officer will have the following responsibilities:
* Monitor grants through extended site visits, review of narrative and financial reports and other communication with grantees;
* Focus in particular on human rights, labor migration and other areas as assigned;
* Work with applicants to develop and finalize grant proposals;
* Liaise with associated Foundations and non-governmental organizations in developing complementary strategies and approaches;
* Perform site visits of prospective and current grantees;
* Managing a grants program, including soliciting and evaluating grant proposals in the context of broader policy efforts, overseeing due diligence on grants implementation, and supervising 1-2 staff members.


Qualifications
* Master's Degree or higher
* Excellent organizational, communication, and analytical skills;
* Extensive regional knowledge;
* Strong verbal and writing skills in English;
* Fluency in Russian strongly desirable; knowledge of Central Asian or South Caucasus languages a plus;
* 10 years experience working in human rights, journalism and with civil society
