TUSHETI: The Sheperds Way - The Photographer Dima Gomberg (dimagomberg.com)

Shepherding is one of the oldest occupations, originating more than 6,000 years ago in Asia Minor. We learn about shepherds from our religions where in the Judeo-Christian tradition, the term is metaphorically used for God. In Islam, Muhammad prided himself in being part of a rich tradition of prophets who worked as shepherds. Sikhism has many mentions of shepherd tales.
Shepherds are also found in literature where they are involved in rescuing foundlings such as Oedipus, Romulus and Remus, the title characters of Longus’ Daphnis and Chloe, and The Winter’s Tale by Shakespeare.
Today most of us are far removed from the lives of shepherds. Perhaps that is why we are so fascinated with images of people who still find their livelihood as shepherds. Our fascination only increases when the images are as exquisite as those of Dima Gomberg’s. Check out this stunning photographic series called “The Shepherds Way,” by Gomberg, which depicts this ancient way of life.
