Project ArtBeat in Tbilisi presented personal exhibition of Avto Meskhi. The exposition includes mixed media works: collages, paintings and drawings made during 1984-2015. Curated by Natia Bukia.
Avto Meskhi, due to his introvert personality and moreover his tragic life is a lesser-known painter in Georgia and abroad. Accordingly, Private Acquaintance, his solo exhibition held at the gallery exactly a year ago is a very important event for the Georgian art scene.
The artist was born in Tbilisi, 1946 and lived and worked in Tbilisi and Rustavi. When Project ArtBeat discovered Meskhi he was 70 years old, he already had lost his home, where he lived with his mother and was spending last years ...

GEORGIAN ART: Nina Gomarteli interviewed her mother Maka Batiashvili: I Try to Show not Just a Particular Figure I am Drawing, but My Attitude Towards that Figure. via @cbwge
(cbw.ge) Maka Batiashili is a Georgian artist who works in painting, book illustration, and video art. Her inspiration comes from the moments of mundane reality that frequently turn into important visual images. The artist grasps moments from ordinary situations, which find participants on the verge, where keeping a balance is required. The key concept for Maka is a person surrounded by an emotional environment and things that constantly balances the situation, and never cross the lines. CBW had an interview with Maka Batiashvili:
Your exhibition "Moment of Narcissism" has recently opened. Where did the idea for the title come from?
Narcissism is a slowed down or rigid moment when we focus on ourselves, observe our sights or our senses, and at the same time, get very close to our identity, and start controlling it. At this time, everything is distorted, and there is only "me," and nothing else around it. This is one of the pleasures that our brains and bodies constantly seek. These works have been created with this idea underpinning it, which was displayed at the Project Art Beat Gallery.
What was the work process like, and how did you decide to put it together, or when the time for the exhibition was?
I worked until I had something to say; it's easy to just feel like it’s good enough, completed. At the time, I was completely engrossed in this, and not just during the process of drawing, but also in different situations, observing people, how they behaved, how they looked, how they posed for a photo, and so on. The mind fixes the image, and then some part is realized, from the thoughtful state to the material level. At this point, this topic is over for me, and I chose a new theme to work on after a month-long interval, it’s a good feeling for a fresh start.
The process of working, in general, depends on different attributes. It is like being a child, who constantly needs to be amazed and impressed. At this time, I don't think I am trying anything special, I just prefer to convey everything as simply as possible. I try to show not just a particular figure I am drawing, but my attitude towards that figure.
What makes you the most comfortable at this time?
Everything, good lighting, tranquility, a deliberate pace, sounds coming from the street, the sound of the wind, dogs barking, neighbors shouting, kids shouting in the yard. But by no means music, this time it holds my power because the focus is on it.
What was your education like?
I chose to go to the Academy of Arts, without any fuss. I told my family about my decision, and he immediately received my support. We chose a teacher and started to work with him as a student. My painting teacher was Bezhan Shvelidze, who had 20 students like me. It was a workshop near Nutsubidze Street, now called Pablo Picasso Street. Along the way, I realized that this is how I want to spend my entire life. There were no special restrictions here, there was a sense of freedom and a desire to become an extraordinary artist. Here, I could see so many students painting the same exact still life, yet these paintings would have come out entirely different from one another.
My teacher didn't give me a lot of notes, telling me: ‘’you know the most important thing - how to enjoy drawing, and there’s nothing more important... go on and have fun, darling! I’m always observing you, and you seem to be ecstatic; loving what you do, is the case, can’t be taught by a teacher, although one can create an atmosphere, where a student will study for pleasure, rather than obligation.
I was enrolled in the Academy of Arts in 1992, and it is easy to imagine what the situation there was like at the time. There was chaos in every sense, the first shock was that some of my students were not too keen on drawing. And whoever enjoyed it, would look crazy. It's still unclear to me why they chose this university. For a painting I dedicated my entire life to, the teacher didn't show up to the lecture for an entire year, and many other frustrating stories, but it was still so mysterious and appealing. I remember I arrived there hanging on a trolleybus, only to get there somehow…..because it was a meeting place, a strange and unexpected world that allowed for freedom.
Have you met any famous artist that affected your work?
I participated in a group exhibition recently where one of Natela Iankoshvili's paintings was presented. When I stopped by her drawing, fragments of memories would come out. I was 14 years old when I met her at her at the workshop, perhaps a relative of mine had invited me as a guest. Natela and her husband hosted us. For the first time there, I came across huge, distinct drawings in the artist's workplace. I remember how attentive they were to me, to treat me as an adult, and not as a child, they talked to me, showed me around and explained each painting. At some point, Natela and I were left alone, and she said to me: I haven't seen your paintings, but you have such a deep look your eyes, I believe you can be a good artist. Remember, the most important thing is to have your own distinctive style, for people to recognize it’s you. I tried it, and I think it worked. This is the power of words. As for the visual impact, I think all the artists I’ve ever seen contributed, even a bit.
What role do you think your artworks have, or will have in the future?
I'm bringing colors and lines to this, superficially speaking. I'm just looking for something, constantly. In today' s technological era, we have a continuous stream of information that causes information intoxication, from time to time. The righteous and fictional are intertwined, at such times, and I have a desire to find something very simple and frivolous in the world of these skyscrapers. What role it may play in the future will be decided by time, and by the people.
When did you feel like a success?
A sense of success helps people to keep going in all professions. It is an extraordinary feeling of power and motivation, but I felt successful when I stopped caring about it, and as boring as it may sound, I just go with the flow, I draw in this flow, and everything else comes on its own, with no pressure…
In what profession would you imagine yourself, if you weren’t an artist?
I would be an ecologist, I’m very interested in this field. I love and it hurts. It hurts because most of this world consists of air, and we don't have it in our city. Breathing is a symbol of life and it lacks that aspect here, it brings a sense of helplessness, and I have no power to abandon my socially active life and escape from the centre of the city to live in the village.
Project ArtBeat appeared in the art arena just a few years ago, and it’s always in the spotlight. What is it like collaborating with a contemporary art gallery?
I already knew Natia Bukia when it opened, she bought some of my artwork, then I met Salome Vakhania, and was told about their idea; then, many galleries opened up, but it was a bold move on their part. Because it is a complex and financially unsustainable business. I liked this decision a lot, it was very bold, and thoughtlessly joined them. During these 4 years, they’ve implemented many important projects, and Georgian art has been brought to numerous important art markets, worldwide.
Can you share what the subject of your upcoming series is?
It's a fog driven by two contrasting, masses of warm and cold air, the most mysterious grey quilt in atmospheric events.

Today when we live in digital world and own social networks, we have an amazing possibility to represent the best version of ourselves. Here is place where imaginary and real life meets each other and after all everything becomes as information chaos. Represented works are created by observing and speculating with these moods... and narcissism is considered not as a human flaw but as logical expression of personal identity and controlling of own state”. - Maka Batiashvili

Colored spots on a neutral background are clearly readable. Processing of simple shapes of the drawings is easily observable. Works are dominated by bright colors and simple compositions. The pictures created with tusche on paper are charged with energy.

KUNST: Zwei Ausstellungen von Gela Samsonidse in Kenzingen und Neuf-Brisach
Kann Abstraktion narrativ sein und Figuration sich nicht nur auf die reine Gegenständlichkeit beschränken? Gela Samsonidse, der 1965 in Tiflis geboren wurde, dürfte darin keinen Gegensatz sehen. Denn es ist, als würden seine Bilder die vermeintliche Opposition von figurativer und abstrakter Malerei aufheben. Da klettert ein Bergsteiger einen Felsen hoch, der nur aus quer laufenden Balken zu bestehen scheint, in die sich sein eigener Schatten eingeprägt hat. Da verbergen lamellenartige Streifen eine Interieurszene, die links und rechts von bunten, ornamentalen Kringeln flankiert wird. Seitdem Gela Samsonidse in Tiflis sein Studium an der Staatlichen Kunstakademie abgeschlossen hat, war der Georgier, der seit 1994 bei Freiburg lebt, durch seine abstrakten Bilder aufgefallen, nicht zuletzt durch seine Zeichnungen auf außergewöhnlich schmalem Format. Sie schienen ein sowohl als auch zu verbinden, ein davor mit einem dahinter. Nun, zehn Jahre später, vereint er Abstraktion und Figuration miteinander. Die Porträts, oft nach dem eigenen Familienalbum entstanden, darunter auch einige Selbstporträts, sind die radikale Standortbestimmung eines Malers, der viele Gegensätze zwar nicht aufzuheben, aber auf der Leinwand auszutragen vermag.

ART: Painting and Drawing by Mariam Kandiashvili
Born in 1993 Tbilisi, Georgia. Mariam Kandiashvili started her education in visual art at the age of twelve at a private studio of famous Georgian artists Tamaz and Gia Khutsishvili. After graduating high school she continued her studies abroad. She took a contemporary art preparatory course at Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam. Later moved to England and studied illustration for two years at Arts University Bournemouth. In 2016 returned to Tbilisi and continued her artistic practice there.
Kandiashvili’s artworks are focused on various themes such as; Christian mysticism, world mythology, literature and poetry, psychology, aesthetic style and music of western culture of 1950s, 60s and 70s. Her works portray dreamlike and enigmatic worlds, imaginary lands, emotionally expressive portraits, modern day cityscapes, bizarre characters and beasts. Her works are often containing texts and poems created by the author herself. She works with the use of different materials and likes experimentation but chooses oil painting as her main medium.

ART: Art Villa Garikula / არტ ვილა გარიყულა - Metamorph - Bolgarsky Palace in Venice
The summer residence was equipped with heating system and plumbing and boasted with wonderful wine cellar, as well as Champaign production and canning. The delicious output of Bolgarsky estate, could have been bought not only in the Russian Empire’s parent state but in Paris as well. After the establishment of the Soviet Rule, with the beginning of Red Terror Bolgarski was declared people’s enemy and subsequently executed. Estate was plundered. A boarding school was opened in the Bolgarky residence, but to everyone’s dismay, later closed, abandoned and used as a hay barn in a village.
Art villa started in late 90s of the last century as an artists’ squat based in Bolgarsky Palace, a derelict and desolate building which was cleaned and put in order with the help of artists, architects and students from Tbilisi State Academy of Arts led by the educator and painter Karaman Kutateladze. The process of rehabilitation was carried out in accordance with the new functions of the cultural heritage. Later, its result was turned into architectural project Garikula - Center of Arts. The latter presented Georgia first time at the Venice Biennial of Architecture in 2004 titled METAMORPH. The project showcased the metamorphosis of the Bolgarsky Palace from the abandoned heritage into its new future as the Centre for Contemporary Art.

ART: Tsisia Kiladze - Georgian Painter based in Tbilisi

Tsisia Kiladze was born in 1975 in Tbilisi, Georgia. She studied from 1992 at the Academy of Arts in Tbilisi, specializing in art history and theory. In 1999-2005 she was a Ph.D. student at the National Chubinashvili Institute for Georgian Art History, where she also promoted in 2005. This was followed by a DAAD scholarship and further education at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, 2010 September. Guest stay supported by Academic Swiss Caucasus Net at the University of Friborg, 2011 a one-year scholarship from DAAD scholarship for a research stay at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Further steps were the restoration and conservation of wall paintings in various churches in Georgia, publication of the book on painted staircases of Tbilisi and "Charm of Tbilisi". Since 2009, she has been teaching at the Chair of Art History at the Academy of Arts and since 2012 she has been a research assistant at the Staatliche Kunstmuseum.
As a painter, she is an autodidact and has been actively painting for years. She's on Various exhibitions and lives and works in Tbilisi.
In April (2016) your personal exhibition in Tbilisi took place in the gallery "Baia".

VERNISSAGE. TRUNITY - eine georgisch-österreichische Ausstellung; 8. Juni 19.00 Uhr; Kunstraum am Schauplatz in Wien
Die österreichisch-georgische kollaborative Ausstellung Trunity zielt darauf ab, die Kunstwelt als solche und deren Dimension und Authentizität zu erforschen. Auf den Spuren von Trends (Multimedia, Klangkunst, relationale Kunst etc.) werden weltweit große Kunstproduktionen geschaffen. Diese modischen Tendenzen stimulieren die Inflation von Werken mit wahren Hintergründen und Referenzen und führen oft zu gefälschten und oberflächlichen Positionen. Trunity wird strategisch die Spontanietät und den Austausch zwischen Künstlern aus verschiedenen Gesellschaften (europäisch / transformativ) erforschen und zum Ausdruck bringen - die Beziehung der falschen/wahren Perspektiven in der aktuellen künstlerischen Praxis. Malerei, Skulptur, Sound Performance und neue Medien / Video werden die dominierenden Medien dieses Projekts sein.

CLASSIC MUSIC: The Amazing Georgian Pianist Elisso Bolkvadze (www.elisso-bolkvadze.com)
(www.elisso-bolkvadze.com) Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, in the family of poets and writers, Elisso Bolkvadze began her musical study at the early age of four and performed her first concert with orchestra attheage of seven.
She’s a musician with numerous talents with an outstanding sensibility and brilliant virtuosity. As described by legendary Maestro Zubin Mehta, she is a pianist with a "complete control over the instrument”.
A superstar in her country of birth, prize winner of many international piano world competitions, Elisso Bolkvadze was awarded with "The Medal of Georgian Government” – one of the most prestigious national honors.
The Georgian artist has established herself as a vivid cultural heritage protector and became UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2015.
Bolkvadze is actively engaged in charity actions in order to help young talents and founded Charity Foundation "Lyra” in 2013, in her homeland Georgia.
She began her piano studies at the local Conservatory and continued in Moscow Conservatory with Tatiana Nikolaeva.
Her musical career and development as an artist was greatly influenced by musician and Doctor of Philosophy, Michel Sogny and his unique Piano Method.
Her performance highlights have included collaborations with: Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Santa Fe Festival Orchestra, Lithuanian National Orchestra, National Philharmonic of Ukraine and Lviv, Innsbruck Symphony Orchestra, TheGewandhaus Orchestra, France National Orchestra, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Krakow Philharmonic, Orchestre Colonne, United Nations Symphony Orchestra, Georgian Opera State Orchestra, Qatar Philharmonic.
She also tours with recital concerts in Asia, America and Europe, playing Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Debussy, Prokofiev and Chopin. As an Artist of Distinction, she will perform Mozart piano concerto N21 for the season opening in Maumelle Performing Art Center in USA with Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and Philip Mann as a conductor.
She recorded several albums for Sony BMG and Cascavelle Lable, performing piano concertos by Beethoven, Rachmaninoff and Liszt.
In 2015 Bolkvadze released an album "Prokofiev, Schubert” with Lable Audite that had a great critical acclaim and granted the title «Pianist Maestro».
As an artist actively engaged in cultural and human rights actions, Elisso Bolkvadze gave a charity concert in collaboration with the Embassy of Georgia, in March 2014 at Victoria Hall Geneva, She played Saint-Saens piano concerto N2 with the United Nations Orchestra for supporting Georgian children that have suffered from war. As well as series of charity concerts in Georgia in order to help individual patients and children affected by cancer.
In 2013 she founded Batumi International Music Festival on the shore of the Black Sea. It’s an important cultural highlight in Georgia, where artists of different cultures gather to create musical excellence. One of the main inspirations of the festival is to broaden the power of cultural dialogue, unify people around high values and become one of the important bridges of building peace around the world.
For her outstanding contribution to the development of culture and personal commitment to cultural exchanges between France and Georgia, Elisso Bolkvadze received the distinction of Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by French Republic in October 2015.

Wie gehen Künstler mit dieser geografischen Situation und Geschichte um? Ausgangspunkt für die Begegnung der georgischen Künstlerinnen ist das Engagement von Frauen und die Leidenschaft für Geschichten.
Anschließend: Vorstellung "Continu", nach der Vorstellung begehbare Installation mit Essen und DJ.
Die Compagnie Sasha Waltz & Guests arbeitet seit über 20 Jahren mit Menschen aus allen Kontinenten und erfährt auf weltweiten Tourneen viel Gastfreundschaft und Interesse. Sasha Waltz nimmt die fünf Vorstellungen von "Continu" zum Anlass, unter dem Motto "ZUHÖREN" Gästen aus dem Nahen Osten, dem Mittelmeerraum und Deutschland eine Plattform zu geben: Für Präsentationen, intensive Gespräche und Begegnungen zu den Themen künstlerische Strategien, Frauen in Krisensituationen im Nahen Osten und den Möglichkeiten zivilgesellschaftlichen Engagements in den Künsten, den Medien und im täglichen Leben.
Keti Dolidze, georgische Schauspielerin, Festivaldirektorin "GIFT Tiflis" und Begründerin des "Women's International White Scarf Movement" im georgischen Bürgerkrieg der 90er Jahre.
Nino Haratischwili, georgische Regisseurin und Autorin, lebt in Deutschland. Ihr epochaler Familienroman "Das achte Leben (Für Brilka)" macht die Geschichte Georgiens im 20. Jahrhundert über vier Generationen Frauenschicksale erlebbar.
Salome Jashi, georgische Dokumentarfilmerin und Unterstützerin der Dokumentarfilmszene im Südkaukasus ist der Region und exemplarischen Geschichten bis in die entlegensten Gebiete auf der Spur.
ZUHÖREN: Raum-Installation
2003 schuf Sasha Waltz die choreographische Installation "insideout" (Bühne: Sasha Waltz/Thomas Schenk), die sich mit den Biographien der Tänzer von Sasha Waltz & Guests und ihren Migrationserfahrungen beschäftigte. Mit einzelnen Bestandteilen dieses Bühnenbildes entsteht für die Dauer von "ZUHÖREN" ein Begegnungsraum für kleine und große Gespräche, gemeinsames Essen nach der Vorstellung mit unterschiedlichen Gastgebern, den "hosts", Life-Musik und DJs. Die Installation wird sich Laufe der Woche dynamisch durch die Teilnahme unterschiedlicher Menschen und Initiativen weiterentwickeln.
Im Anschluss an die Vorstellung (ab ca. 22 Uhr) oder in Kombination mit den Gesprächen. Eintritt frei, Einlass unabhängig von Vorstellung und Gesprächen.

Sasha Waltz lädt angesichts der aktuellen Situationen von Flucht und zivilem Engagement zu Begegnungen und Gesprächen mit unterschiedlichen Persönlichkeiten. Was sind unsere künstlerischen Strategien, um politisch Einfluss zu nehmen? Modellhafte Initiativen aus Berlin stellen sich vor.
ZUHÖREN ist ein Projekt von Sasha Waltz & Guests und wird gefördert aus Zuwendungen des Landes Berlin und aus Mitteln des Hauptstadtkulturfonds.

David Kukhalashvili from Tbilisi in his studio. He studied from 2005 till 2009 at Tbilisi State Academy of Art, Georgia. But by rector's decision his diploma was denied because of his critic on the Academy's system. In his drawings and paintings he shows a critical approach to and the reflection on contemporary Georgian society makes — mit David Kukhalashvili.

OPEN CALL: Participation in the workshop - experimental short films on “Rhythm of the Everyday, with Tbilisi Migrants” (geoair.blogspot.de)
(geoair.blogspot.de) The workshop is conceptualized in the framework of “Cooking Imaginations: Tbilisi Migrant Stories” project. The theme of the workshop concerns the urban realm of Tbilisi, the “new” migrants living here and respective rhythm, rituals and everydayness of the city.
We invite artists, researchers and other interested professionals in Georgia to apply for the participation in the workshop conducted by GeoAIR and Dr. Richard Baxstrom. Two weeks of intensive work will include readings, theoretical debates, film screenings and discussions, as well as fieldwork, evaluation of each other’s work progress and the making of short films constituting to the final work, later produced as one DVD and screened in selected locations.
