TBILISI: Festival – Restaurant Divan: experiencing new authentic cuisine. By Baia Dzagnidze (georgiatoday.ge)

http://www.georgiatoday.ge/upload_files/thumbnail/divani-(6).jpg(georgiatoday.ge) The newly reopened Restaurant Divan under the management of the Kala Group, offers European and Asian cuisine on its ground floor and lounge area, with a special touch from chef Konstantin Tedeluri.

The venue has not been radically changed under the new management and still has three floors and features a restaurant, lounge and club. According to Tazo Davarashvili, the manager, they altered the lounge area and brought a new menu and dishes. Maia Sumbadze’s scorched and embossed paintings on wood decorate the lounge walls.

Tedeluri notes that the meals they offer are unique and unusual, seldom found in other Georgian restaurants. European cuisine on the ground floor features dishes like shrimp spring rolls, French baguette, pizza, spaghetti, chicken fillet with Dutch cheese, and berries and creamy sauce. Meanwhile the Asian menu covers Japanese, Thai and Chinese classics like sushi, Kung Pao and Teriyaki Chicken.

The chef revealed that the beef fillet sautйed in red wine and plums served with wild rice was the restaurant’s most special dish. “We also have Georgian desserts made in a European way, such as Kada baked in puff pastry served with ice-cream and cherry jam,” he explains adding that the kitchen offers home-made lemonades of various flavors including ginger, pomegranate and lemon.

Chef Tedeluri also notes that he uses only fresh ingredients and home-made dressings, and has completely removed mayonnaise and ketchup from his kitchen.

“As the owners are Ukrainians, they requested to have seven traditional dishes in the menu, including Pelmeni [dumplings], Borsch and cutlet. However, I completely broke from tradition. For instance, Pelmeni are not served in clay pots, but in Chinese plates and with chopsticks,” he clarifies.

Teleduri acquired his culinary experience and knowledge in Berlin, where he worked in two Georgian restaurants, Mimino and Genatsvale as well as in Gacha and Pasternatti. He is fully proficient in Georgian cuisine but packages meals in a more modern style. “Cooking is not only my profession, but I enjoy it to the fullest,” says Tedeluri adding that he pays high attention to the quality of a meal, and would rather wait an extra ten minutes for a high quality meal, than be presented an inferior dish but in a shorter time.

During his nine years in Berlin, he participated in several international festivals including Grune Woche [Green Week] presenting Georgian meals to the German capital’s public. Since his return to Georgia last year, he has been working at Maestro TV in the MagtiFun project and now has his show on Thursdays on Dgis Show on Imedi TV.

Each Friday and Saturday the venue puts on different events, live music and DJs. In addition, special cultural evenings are planned on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Der Refrain ihrer „Hymne“ lautet „Chveni Kavkasioni”, was „unser Kaukasus“ heißt.

Die zweite Sonderausstellung „Who Are You or The School of Happiness“, die vom Polnischen Institut Wien unterstützt wird, präsentiert unter der kuratorischen Begleitung der polnischen Kunsthistorikerin Klara Czerniewska zeitgenössische Kunstpositionen aus Polen. Teilnehmende KünstlerInnen sind: Tymek Borowski, Hubert Czerepok, Łukasz Jastrubczak, Przemek Matecki, Dominika Olszowy, Małgorzata Szymankiewicz, Maria Toboła und Jan Zamoyski.

CULTURE: South Caucasus Contemporary Dance & Experimental Art Festival in Tbilisi - 2nd - 9th June 2013 (dancearttbilisi.ge)

(dancearttbilisi.ge) The idea to organize the festival in Tbilisi and build an artistic platform to contribute to the development of modern dance and experimental arts emerged in 2012. The festival is initiated and organized by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and “Platform for Changes”, a Georgian non-profit organisation, which intends to strengthen the role of arts as a significant factor for social changes in the South Caucasus, to foster the dialogue and interaction between artists internationally by broadening the discourse about innovative arts and diverse presenting forms.

The festival is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and Tbilisi City Hall, the Europe House is the festival partner.

There are two main directions within the festival: modern dance and experimental art. The first festival spans an eighteen months period. It will open with a program in modern dance and experimental art from the 2nd to the 9th of June. Among the participants are Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Russian, Swiss, French, Austrian and Croatian dancers, choreographers, and organizers of different modern dance festivals. In the same period a three-day festival of street-art will take place. During this festival, graffiti creators from Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan together with a Belgian street artist of Georgian origin, Zuka Mikaberidze, will apply graffiti to the walls of the newly opened underground crossing near the former Hippodrome.

The next event will be a conference in September 2013 held in honor of famous Georgian balletmeister and choreographer, Giorgi Alexidze, followed by different exhibitions of experimental art from the 1st to the 14th of December 2013. From the 24th to the 28th of February 2014, the festival will host screenings of documentaries about South Caucasian ballet traditions, thus honoring classical ballet as the foundation of modern dance.

The festival is initiated and organized by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and “Platform for Changes”, also funded by Tbilisi City Hall, Pro Helvetia and Austrian Embassy in Baku. Festival Sponsor: Don Giuseppe - Italian Restaurant. Festival partners: Europe House and Authorized School Nr. 6

Catherine Vasenina about the importance of the festival

Festival - the best format for the re-imagining of any genre.

Festival - a meeting place, an exchange of information, a place to find dates, find inspiration, and share mutual learning. Contemporary dance - a very open, very liberal, multi-genre, and yet specific art. The cocktail of choreographic language presented at this festival has been influenced by so many factors. First of all, the willingness of a society to grasp the meaning and importance of an experiment like this, and to support it. This stimulates creative choreographers; it encourages them to find ways to develop the traditions of a local culture with an eye to the current social atmosphere.

This initiative, Tbilisi's festival, is particularly valuable due to the incredibly interesting and rich traditional culture of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, the three countries of the South caucasus. These are traditions which are too often omitted from the world of modern dance, leaving them as a rich, untapped well of inspiration and new takes on authentic material. By making contact with the traditional culture of modern dance the Caucasus has a better chance of finding itself, of discovering how to represent itself in the world of contemporary dance. And this festival is the perfect chance!

My best congratulations on the timely and very important organization of this festival!

Catherine Vasenina, dance writer for "Ballet" magazine (Moscow), author of "The Russian contemporary dance. Dialogues "(Moscow, 2005), and "Contemporary dance of post-SovietSpace" (Moscow, 2013).

Congratulations, Maia!
