EXHIBITION: Supra of Her Own / საკუთარი სუფრა - 25th until July 22th 2014, at the Nectar Gallery in Tbilisi (gallerynectar.ge)

(gallerynectar.ge) We cordially invite you to ‘Supra of Her Own’ – an exhibition about gender-based violence against women in Georgia. From June 25th until July 22th 2014, at the Nectar Gallery in Tbilisi, we offer a reflection about the social invisibility of women’s painful experiences and propose new possibilities of making it public.

Supra of Her Own is a collaboration between an artist - Tamuna Chabashvili (Georgia/Netherlands), an anthropologist - Agnieszka Dudrak (Poland/Switzerland), a Georgian NGO (Anti-Violence Network of Georgia), and a grassroots initiative The exhibition will also host five days of performances by Mareike Wenzel (Germany), a lecture by Nadia Tsulukidze (Georgia/Netherlands), and sound installation by Eliza Proszczuk (Poland).

In patriarchal societies, many women’s experiences remain invisible, hidden, taboo, or even nameless. This exhibition will become a temporary, open space, resembling Virginia Woolf’s a Room of One’s Own, where diverse testimonies of abuse will become visible and open for interpretation and discussion.

Inspired by the traditional Georgian dinner – a supra - we will place on our metaphorical table that which is generally banned from the table – stories of women who experienced gender-based violence. Our project conceives of our supra as something more than a male-dominated and suppressive performance of social norms. For us, supra can be an improvised performance where deep, personal feelings can be expressed publicly in an atmosphere of hope, of laughter, of creativity and freedom. Using the supra with all its normative and subversive potential as a metaphorical platform will allow us to make the invisible visible, and raise awareness of the ways in which many of us conspire in the process of silencing of some women’s experiences.

The installation and videos are based on the quotations from interviews; mostly survivors of domestic abuse. In addition, women who experienced this type of violence, some members of the grassroots initiative “გესმით ქალების ხმა?” created memorabilia based on their personal experience. In this way we wish to give voice to those who are generally silenced.

In her performance the actress Mareike Wenzel will inhabit the installation of Tamuna Chabashvili for several days. She is going to explore the space by living there and creating a kind of shadow character and a moment of irritation for the observer. It is not about creating a big scenario but rather about images showing how women experiencing violence, are often made invisible in our society. It is more about the looking from the outside into space, about what is visible and what stays hidden. Mareike will start after the opening on Tuesday night and stay till Friday morning.

Catalog as PDF here

2009, dvd, 11 min.
Natia Tzulukidze: “The video “Georgian sexual revolution” is connected to Georgian
Rose revolution, which happened in 2003 and was a bloodless revolution that displaced President Eduard Shevardnadze, who is mainly well known in Germany. A sigificant source of funding for the Rose revolution was the network of foundations and NGOs associated
with American billionaire George Soros, who spent 42 million $ for the overthrow
of Shevardnadze.

In January 2004 the leader of the Rose revolution Michael Saakashvili won the presidential elections and took course towards West. He was educated in the United States and became internationally known after the war with Russia in august 2008.
Georgian Rose revolution was an inspiration for Ukrainian Orange revolution in 2004 and Kyrgyzstan Pink or so called Tulip revolution in 2005.
My work is a first investigation into Georgian Sexual revolution, that didn’t happen yet in Georgia, mainly because of the lack of time.

The drawings of buildings, which cought her eye, Patricia London made in the first days wandering around in Tbilisi. She had focused exclusively on Soviet and Investment architecture, but this was made clear to her only later by her georgian art friends. All 8 drawings are interconnected by the „man in the moon“, representing the 8 moon phases and 8 portraits
of famous males, which you can as well interpret as a boy‘s most favorites, tatooed on his belly. Arkitekturis was made during the state of emergency for the whole of Georgia from 7th to 15th nov 07, when it was forbidden to go out.

ART: Introduction lecture to Georgian sexual revolution by Nadia Tsulukidze

OFF EUROPA: Art Blog by Nadia Tsulukidze & Sophia Tabatadze - Performance, installation, movement, speech.

Khinkali Juice - General Concept

In 2005 Sophia Tabatadze (1977, visual arts) and Nadia Tsulukidze (1976, performing arts/contemporary dance) started working together and combining different art disciplines. These are visual, media, movement, music and speech art forms combined in polyphonic way. In our performance/installations different disciplines play equal roles. The forms are there to supplement and support content and form rather than illustrate or decorate each other. The performances are always site-specific. Each performance is different depending on their reaction as well as characteristics of the space we use. Given that in the past few years borders between different disciplines within the contemporary art became thinner relevance and importance to create interdisciplinary projects grew. The themes of performances deal with social events surrounding us. The problems are not approached directly and aggressively but they go through the artistic processes and gain weight, humor and importance as we go along. The dramaturgy is based on the abstract principle and develops during the working process, mirroring specific social situations. We do not use written scenario beforehand. The themes like male-female dependence, cultural and professional habits, questioning the Georgian toasting traditions, growing importance of the religion in Georgia, the blind copy-pasting from the West etc. are worked on and brought into the discussion.

During the OFF EUROPA Theatre-Festival we show the remarkable videoart by both in the ditorei Galerie in Leipzig. Georgian Table Traditions (Progressive Nostaligia) - curated by Victor Misiano - is very interesting and overcrossing between different daily rules and rites in Georgia. Good stuff for thinking and nevertheless for laughing.

OFF EUROPA: FERMATA. Premiere by Nadia Tsulukidze

Dienstag, den 14. Oktober
LOFFT.Leipzig - Lindenauer Markt
20 Uhr

Nadia Tsulukidze, Tbilisi, Georgien
Fermata (work in progress / Premiere)

"Wovon leben Sie?", fragen mich die Leute.
"Vom Tanzen."
"Oh, georgischer Volkstanz?", mit freudigem Ausdruck.
"Nein."
"Oh, Ballett?", noch immer erfreut.
"Nein."
