CULTURE: MOVES #50: Giorgi Maisuradze - on Parajanov May 14, 2013

Sergei Parajanov (1924 born in Tbilisi, Georgia, 1990 died in Yerewan, Armenia) is one of the most important and prolific filmmakers of the 20th Century.

Under hostile conditions for independent artists, under Soviet censorship and criminal prosecution – as an artist as well as an homosexual – Parajanov succeeded in developing and completing his very own stile. With his moderate oeuvre of less than 20 films he inspired and still inspires innumerable artists, writers, musicians, and – of course – filmmakers.

Giorgi Maisuradze – a Berlin based Cultural Studies academic, writer and translator – will report in image, text and sound on Parajanov.

NOTE: This talk starts at 6:15 PM !!!

"An Archaeological Survey of the Vani Site"
...
This session is an "encore presentation" from last season. Since it was one of the best presentations last year, and few were able to attend because it took place at the height of the fall conference season, we have asked Ryan to present again. This is a very well presented talk with fascinating visuals about the really remarkable things that have been discovered in Vani and about the technology and methodology used in current and future work there, so we encourage everybody to attend!

BLOG: Critical thoughts about Georgian Contemporary Art Situation. By Nini Palavandishvili (georgianfemaleartists.blogspot.com)

(Raw material, fragment)

Contemporary art and contemporary art environment is very young term in Georgia. In 2004, as i returned from Germany to Georgia, the situation i found was very difficult in terms of there was no public present of contemporary art scene in Georgia. All the active artist were working in their ateliers and there was no communication taking place in the general public. There are several problems, which are reciprocal and accumulate a general situation which we face today in Georgia's art scene.
There is no pre-programmed residency available in Tbilisi (there are art pensions for artists), and very rear opportunities for curators and theoreticians to work in and about Georgia and Caucasus. It is important to stress that our residency program is emphasizing a collaborative process with institutions, organizations and culture producers from the Caucasus region to strengthen and extend the artistic foundation of this area and to encourage and stimulate the exchange of knowledge and the production of significant cultural projects on long-term basis.

www.artisterium.org There are several curators, interested in Georgian art scene, supporting it and contributing to its development, Daniel Bauman is organising since 2004 international art projects called Tbilisi. www.tbilisi2.com
Also Goethe Institute and British Council in Georgia are supporting exchange between contemporary artist from and to Georgia very much.
