ART: Artisterium VI in Tbilisi, Georgia (artisterium.org/Artisterium2013)

(artisterium.org/Artisterium2013) The concept, proposed by the creative group (students, artists, curators) is considered as the cultural process, appropriate to the creativity of the art academy’s teaching process and generally, to an artistic scene, the one, where the significant facet of the country’s cultural politics is defined. The architecture of the exhibition project’s content “Me and your freedom”, with its progressive world disposition impulse and the instinct of searching for the self-identity, is organically corresponding with the “Artisterium” idea.

The exhibition curator: Nino Gujabidze

Artisterium VI

4-14 October, 2013, Tbilisi, Georgia

Am I You?

The only difference between me and you are the choices we make.

Unknown quote
The Artisterium VI, the annual international contemporary art exhibition and series of public art events, opens in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi on October 4th, and runs through October 14, 2013.

“Artisterium” is an evolving curatorial platform. Each year its overall theme always responds to prevailing social concerns, such as alternative ways of development (“Modus Operandi – in Quest of a Different Way”, 2008), changes within general and personal levels (“The Manifest of Changes and an Inner Experience”, 2009), artistic reflections on re-envisioning the future (“Imagine the Future”, 2010), the willingness to embrace open-ended subjects as a way to critically engage with important social, political, urban, private and aesthetic issues (“Free Fall”, 2011) and research artistic and theoretical reflections on a wide range of PROTEST (“The Protest that Never Ends”, 2012).

The theme of the Artisterium 6 / 2013 is “Am I You?” Acceptance of the unfamiliar is a crucial aspect of today’s life. There are many kinds of philosophical, social and psychological theories to describe our relationships to minorities, other nations, other religions, or people who think differently – The Other. In the words of Jacques Derrida, “the other can never be understood as presence, but only with concepts like traces and exteriority. He has completely broken with the phenomenological metaphysics of presence — the other can never be understood in a theoretical act, but only by means of ethical responsibility: I take responsibility for the other.” The uneasiness of this kind of responsibility triggers moments of cultural misunderstanding, religious, territorial or personal conflicts.

The theme takes as its source of inspiration a performance by the Georgian artist Iliko Zautashvili “Am I You?” (1998). In the performance the artist uses four participants divided into two pairs and asks them to make attempts at understanding each other. However obstacles are placed between them, like an eye bandage that limits vision while the pair touches each other. In another case the participants recite texts in different languages simultaneously. The work shows the impossibility of communication when fixed within one’s own language, the formality of words and cultural or behavioral stereotypes. It also explores the difficulty in discovering a mutual understanding even when the information is purely sensual.

The Artisterium 2013 theme of “Am I You?” encourages participants to research the phenomena of the Other and the ecology of our relation and responsibility to the Other. We wish to explore possible ways of coexisting with unfamiliar, different or even disagreeable ideologies and lifestyles, while at the same time calling for participation, understanding and empathy. Through the year’s theme we hope to reveal modes of exploring the influence that shape our connections to divers thoughts and attitudes – and even the life forms – living next to us on this planet

Without Bounderies: Curating and Cultural Exchange innthe Intercultural Age“ 2004 u. a.).

Seit zwei Jahren wird in Tbilissi „Artisterium“ – International Exhibition of Contemporary Art, „Modus Operandi – In Quest of a Different Way“ (www.artisterium.org ) veranstaltet.

BLOG: Critical thoughts about Georgian Contemporary Art Situation. By Nini Palavandishvili (georgianfemaleartists.blogspot.com)

(Raw material, fragment)

Contemporary art and contemporary art environment is very young term in Georgia. In 2004, as i returned from Germany to Georgia, the situation i found was very difficult in terms of there was no public present of contemporary art scene in Georgia. All the active artist were working in their ateliers and there was no communication taking place in the general public. There are several problems, which are reciprocal and accumulate a general situation which we face today in Georgia's art scene.
There is no pre-programmed residency available in Tbilisi (there are art pensions for artists), and very rear opportunities for curators and theoreticians to work in and about Georgia and Caucasus. It is important to stress that our residency program is emphasizing a collaborative process with institutions, organizations and culture producers from the Caucasus region to strengthen and extend the artistic foundation of this area and to encourage and stimulate the exchange of knowledge and the production of significant cultural projects on long-term basis.

Since couple of years Georgian ministry of culture started to support Georgian art scene in some way, with their financial support Georgia is represented at Venice Biannale since 2007. Since two years Artisterium - International Contemporary Art Exhibition takes place in Tbilisi
www.artisterium.org There are several curators, interested in Georgian art scene, supporting it and contributing to its development, Daniel Bauman is organising since 2004 international art projects called Tbilisi. www.tbilisi2.com
Also Goethe Institute and British Council in Georgia are supporting exchange between contemporary artist from and to Georgia very much.

ART: Aristerium Brings the Art World to Georgia. By Lizaveta Zhahanina (geotimes.ge)

Art and the act of creating it, the real and the perceived, the public and the artist, the material and the intangible, coalesce in a cacophony of paintings, sculptures, videos, installations and performances at the international exhibition of contemporary art, Aristerium 2009. Organised by the Aristerium Association and the Ministry of Culture, Monument Protection and Sport of Georgia, this second annual event opened in the Karvasla Tbilisi History Museum on Friday, October 9.

The theme of Aristerium 2009, which will continue to enchant the public through Sunday, October 18, is “The Manifest of Changes and the Inner Experience.” Art, as a product of reality digested through an artist’s personal experience, reflects the ever-changing world, shedding new light on human experience and understanding. “They [artists] are researching our world and giving it back to us,” said Benjamin Godsill, curator from the United States. “Perhaps it is not the same kind of research as an economist or a development official [would do] but they [artists] might still find things, and point at things in an oblique way, that otherwise wouldn’t be found.”

Aristerium 2009 has attracted artists, groups of artists, curators and critics from 23 countries including Armenia, Azerbaijan, France, Germany, U.S., U.K., Poland, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, Czech Republic, South Korea, New Zealand, Lithuania, Ireland, Australia, Russia and Georgia. This art forum not only allows international artists to exhibit their work but also provides a venue for them to exchange ideas and insights on the state of contemporary art.

Thus, Aristerium 2009 began with a conference entitled “Beyond or Above Civilization” held at the National Museum Auditorium on Thursday, October 8. “We were trying to determine where we are now in our art,” said Ana Riaboshenko, a Georgian artist and one of the conference’s organisers. “Of course we have a great past, we have beautiful things in our culture, but at the moment we are on a path to somewhere new, we do not know where we are, so we have to find out.”

PHOTOGRAPHY: "Ghost" City of freedom. By Arman Tadevosyan

From May 18 - June2, we will Host Harald Schlutig, Head of Media Cultural Center in Dresden, we will show his photos here in Gyumri, and he will give some workshops and master classes!

"Ghosts"

History is always now and the frequently celebrated call to “learn from history” can only be followed as we succeed to establish a contemporary relation to the past. Such a contemporary relation to a certain period in the past might appear very different, not least with different national points of view. With new constellations of nations, borders and coalitions the process of establishing a relevant relation to a common past becomes even more complex.

The cold war era is a common European experience as well as the time after the peaceful revolution in 1989. This background has a continuing impact on the way we tend to reflect upon present development in European and neighbouring societies. With the great number of aspects involved, especially when choosing a cross border perspective, artistic expression seems to offer unique opportunities to compress the inherent complexity into single statements of art like images or installations.

With the working title “Ghosts” we intend to realize and communicate a theme investigation on time after 1989. Emphasizing that every Nation tends to interpret its own history out of a limited and or selected set of historical facts, we want to confront perspectives in cross border cooperation between the artist run space “5th Floor” in Gyumri Armenia and “Geh8 - Art room and ateliers” in Dresden Germany. In this context we understand our specific sites as representative objectives apt to frame the content of “Ghosts”. Thereby, “5th Floor” offers a perspective out of an Armenian context, among other aspects representing the experience of the newly re-established national independence. “Geh8” on the other hand, acting on the territory of former GDR, would reflect the experience of a dissolved nation state within the re-united BDR. Both sites are in this way continuously confronted with ongoing geopolitical processes and consequences with aspects having their origin back in 1989.

The cooperation process will be based on the main intention to investigate and communicate confronting perspectives on present society and confronting ways of artistic and analytical expression. In this way the process should results in an intense interaction of artistic expression through “works of art” and analytical reflection through “corresponding interpretations through lectures, workshops and essays”.

Origin of investigation will be the urban areas “Mush 1 and Sheram” in Guymri, Armenia on the one hand and corresponding urban phenomena in the region of Dresden, Leipzig and Chemnitz, Germany on the other hand. The urban neighbourhoods “Mush 1 and Sheram” was initiated as a reaction on the earthquake in Armenia in 1988 and to solve the resulting disastrous housing situation. During construction the political situation in Armenia underwent a fundamental transformation with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the establishment of national independence for Armenia.

In consequence the initiated housing projects of “Mush 1 and Sheram” were outdistanced by this transformation as a result of new ideals, goals and concepts. The housing project was in some parts never completed and developed in following years to a kind of ghost city. “Ghost city” as it materializes ideals of a passed order which were not further integrated in the following urban development. Through the physical presence of “Mush 1 and Sheram” the uncompleted urban areas appear as constant reminder of this turn of time, forcing a mental occupation with this appearance today. In the new federal states of Germany corresponding urban processes can be recognized. As a result of a domestic migration from east to west and structural market transformation after 1989 housing areas lost many of their former inhabitants and housing blocks erected in the GDR was suddenly standing empty and in this way resembling a different kind of ghost cities, spread over the territory of former GDR. These architectural structures tend in appearance to express a notion of a “ghost nation” – not existing anymore, but still present.

ART FORUM: International Forum of Contemporary Art, November 4-9, 2008, Tbilisi

`Modus Operandi – in quest of a different way’

All along the human history, unanticipated decisions have created the conditions and motivation for progress. Nowadays society remains in permanent confrontation. We move forward pushing off or repelling each other. Thus we play, compete, communicate, and live.
Artists are the people who offer an experimental reality in which the most unexpected assumptions and intersections are possible. Art as the sphere of a mental (psychical) reflection on the surrounding reality models a different, detected reality. A quest of an alternative, different way in all spheres of human activity may stimulate the overcoming of contradictions and errors to reveal new possibilities.
‘Modus Operandi – in quest of a different way’ is the main theme of the project. It aims at creation of an exchange platform where the International artists are brought together to explore the artistic differences whilst celebrating the commonalities.
Participating artists and curators will meet and exchange with each other, the international art professionals will become familiar with the art-scene of the city. The event is thought as an activity that can contribute to a development of open dialogue, to popularization of contemporary art and culture to the wide public and to establish long-term and fruitful relations between the participants.
