Secret prison cells from the Stalin era have been discovered on a Tbilisi construction site for a $90-million luxury hotel for the international Kempinski Hotel chain. The cells, located in the city’s former Institute of Marxism and Leninism, are believed to be the first of their kind to be found in Georgia since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Construction workers stumbled upon the cells in September when they were demolishing the Institute’s basement for construction of the Kempinski Hotel on the site, said site security manager Davit Kvikvelidze.
Made up of several cage-like structures inserted into the walls of an underground area located beneath the basement, the cells were not visible on the building’s blueprints and did not come to light during an earlier inspection of the building, said a representative of the hotel developers, the United Arab Emirates-based Abu Dhabi Group. Workers also came upon another unsavory discovery -- cemetery gravestones used to build the Institute’s interior walls and columns. The gravestones are believed to come from three Tbilisi cemeteries destroyed during the 1920s and 1930s.
Giorgi Seturidze, the chief executive officer of the Abu Dhabi Group in Georgia, called the discovery "a shock." The Geneva-based Kempinski Hotel chain, which will manage the 240-room facility when it is completed in 2012, would not comment on the discovery.

REPORT: Tbilisi Protestors Start Street Barricades (eurasianet.org)

Hours after Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili rejected the opposition’s ultimatum to step down, opposition leaders threatened to seize systematic control of the country using civil disobedience.
Opposition leaders announced a blockade of streets in front of parliament, the presidential residence and the Georgian Public Broadcasting headquarters every day between 3 pm and 9 pm in Tbilisi.
Levan Gachechiladze, the former presidential candidate, told EurasiaNet that the opposition plans to extend these blockades throughout the capital and, eventually, to the rest of the country until Saakashvili resigns. At an afternoon briefing, National Security Council Secretary Eka Tkeshelashvili told reporters that the government "will not obstruct" protestors from closing the three roads, two of which are major thoroughfares.
"We will have to see for tomorrow how the situation develops," Tkeshalashvili said, noting that the government’s official policy is to allow people to demonstrate. "We are counting on the wisdom of our public as well." Uniformed police in the Georgian capital remain minimal, but alert.
Roughly 90 minutes into the blockade’s 6pm start on April 10, police had partly closed access to one of the blockaded roads, outside of Georgian Public Broadcasting. Yelling slogans, opposition supporters on foot and in cars were loosely grouped on the road outside the TV station, but did not extend much beyond the building.
Meeting with foreign journalists in his office, the Georgian president showed no sign of disquietude at the protests or the opposition’s demands. "I’ve been facing these ultimatums every other month for the past five years," Saakashvili said, calling the demonstrations a "normal part of the Georgian political scenery."
But while neither government nor opposition shows signs of acceding to the other side’s demands, Saakashvili and one opposition leader both are repeating calls for dialogue.

NEWS: Tbilisi Rally Swells, But Falls Short Of Opposition Hopes

TBILISI/PRAGUE (RFE/RL) -- More than 50,000 demonstrators have converged on a square outside the Georgian parliament to hear opposition leaders demand the resignation of Mikheil Saakashvili, with critics blaming the pugnacious president for a host of ills.
In the wake of a much-criticized clampdown on protests ahead of last year's presidential election, flagging economic fortunes and a disastrous conflict with Russia, the opposition has vowed to maintain a vigil outside the legislature until Saakashvili is gone and new elections are held.Protesters were still converging on downtown Tbilisi this afternoon, but attendance appeared destined to fall far short of the 150,000 people organizers were hoping to attract.Smaller protests were reported in other Georgian cities, with no reports of violence or other major incidents.

Dschuta ist ein kleines Dorf von etwa dreißig Familien. Es befindet sich im Herzen der östlichen Massive des georgischen Großen Kaukasus, deren höchste Erhebung mit 5033 Metern der Berg Kasbek darstellt. Sieben Kilometer entfernt von der Grenze zu Inguschetien in der Russischen Föderation liegt Dschuta am Nordhang der Bergkette. Mit einer Höhe von 2200 Metern stellt es knapp hinter Uschguli im westgeorgischen Swanetien den am zweithöchsten bewohnten Ort Europas dar – falls hier überhaupt noch Europa sein sollte. Über einem tiefen Tal gelegen, befindet sich Dschuta am äußersten Rand der georgischen historischen Regionen von Chewi und Chewsuretien. Oberhalb des Dorfes wohnt keine Menschenseele mehr: halb christliche, halb heidnische Heiligtümer aus trockenem Stein kann man dort als einzige Spuren von Zivilisation finden.

EXHIBITION: Archidrome presents Feminist Art Studio SPERO

The project Feminist Art Studio "Spero" aimed to promote feminist art in Georgia; to enable women artists in Georgia to work and become more visible; to ensure women's better access to art resources; to encourage a better representation of women artist in contemporary art of Georgia. The objectives of the project included the following: setting up a feminist art studio which serves female art students, artists and art lovers and is equipped with necessary facilities for creating a comfortable atmosphere for working; promoting feminist values among the participants; enabling them to paint and draw free of charge; raising public interest in feminist art and women artists' work through the studio discussions.

As a result of the project implementation, the Feminist Art Studio Spero worked for 6 months and provided studio space and art resources to 10 women artists; enabled them to work with models; organized two discussions on women artists and feminist art. The studio was equipped with all necessary materials for painting and drawing and created a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere for working. The studio served specifically to professional and amateur women artists, who are unable to afford expensive art materials and studios for working. 10 artists used all the studio resources free of charge during the six months of the project life. During the project implementation, two public discussions were organized devoted to the work of raising women artists' and public's consciousness about feminist art. The studio ensured women artists' access to expensive art materials and also, to albums and books on feminist and women's art.
