Olya Ivanova is a photographer from Moscow: this year she has been to Georgia twice and shot a small
story about Ushguly - the highest living village in Europe (or one of the
highest)
Ushguli (Georgia) is the highest year-round living place in Europe,
2200m above the sea level. It's far away from everything but God. Living
here you feel his presence all the time. Local people always drink the
first toast to God, guests are named 'Gods messengers' and the nearest
pass in the mountains is called 'Behind the God'. You began shooting the
story about svans, Georgian sub-ethnic group living here, but you
finish the story about God's presence. No politics, no history, no
ethnographic or anthropological notes. Just stones beneath your feet and
sky above you.
