Teppichworkshop Sighnaghi

Kaukasusteppiche gelten als die Individualisten unter den Teppichen. Traditionell waren sie keine Handelsware, sondern wurden meist für die eigene Familie hergestellt. Das Geheimnis der Herstellung und die Ornamente wurden von Generation zu Generation weitergeben. Jeder Arbeitsschritt von der Auswahl der Wolle bis hin zum Spannen der Rahmen und das Knüpfen wurde von ein und derselben Person ausgeführt. Echte georgische Teppiche bestehen ausschließlich aus Schurwolle und sind rein pflanzengefärbt.

Der Workshop - Teppiche knüpfen oder weben

Der Teppich-Workshop Sighnaghi bietet eine Einführung in die verschiedenen Arbeitsschritte: Schafschur, Wollbearbeitung, Färben mit Pflanzenfarben, Spinnen und Spannen. Daran schließt sich ein Intensiv-Kurs zum Erlernen der verschiedenen traditionellen Methoden der Teppichherstellung:  knüpfen, weben oder häkeln mit dem Ziel, einen eigenen kleinen Teppich vor Ort herzustellen.

Der  Workshop richtet sich in Dauer und Intensität nach den Wünschen der Gäste und ist sowohl für Einzelreisende als auch für Gruppen bis zu 16 Personen möglich.

Je nach Kursintensität gibt es an den Nachmittagen Freiraum für zusätzliche Aktivitäten wie Ausflüge in der Region, Wandertage oder eine Weintour.
Unterkunft ist das Hotel OLD SIGHNAGHI, das direkt an die Teppichwerkstatt angeschlossen ist. Jedes Zimmer ist mit einem antiken Kaukasusteppich ausgestattet; es gibt traditionelle Küche und zuvorkommende Betreuung.
Sighnaghi ist ein mittelalterliches Städtchen mit mediterranem Flair, umgeben von Weingärten. Hier befindet sich die einzige Teppichwerkstatt in Georgien, die nach altem georgischen Verfahren knüpft. Zahlreiche interessante  Reiseziele liegen in der Nähe: der Lagodechi Nationalpark, die Steppenwüste Garedja mit einem der ältesten Klöster oder das Regionalzentrum Telavi mit der ehemaligen Akademie Ikalto und dem Fürstengut Zinandali.

Lernen Sie auf dieser Reise nicht nur das Teppichhandwerk und die uralte Kultur der Georgier kennen, sondern auch eine traumhafte Region im südlichen Kaukasus, über die schon der Dichter Arthur Leist sagte: "Nirgends bescheint die Sonne einen paradiesischen Garten von solcher Lebensfülle."

(noorimages.com) NOOR, Nikon and Genis Aci Project Office (GAPO) invite photographers to submit their portfolios for selection for the 2014 NOOR-Nikon Masterclass in Documentary Photography in Turkey.

NOOR photo agency and foundation  and Nikon Europe  support documentary photographers from emerging markets all over the world through the organization of annual motivational masterclasses.

The 2014 program takes place in Istanbul, Turkey, organized in collaboration with Genis Aci Project Office (GAPO), 24 March through to 28 March 2014.

The masterclass will be accessible to young and aspiring documentary photographers and photojournalists from the following countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Turkey.

THE WORKSHOP

During the five days of the workshop, 15 participants, together with three member photographers of NOOR and NOOR’s managing director will share experiences, work on portfolios, improve editing skills and learn how to pick up and develop stories. Each day consists of intensive communication with the photographers on the subjects of technical features and the peculiarities of the international photo market. It is a unique opportunity to gain new knowledge, contacts, learn to tell stories in a visual language and develop a personal vision.

The workshop is free of charge; travel and accommodation costs will be reimbursed (possession of a passport and travel insurance is required to apply).

SUBMISSION

For submission you are required to have:

• Basic experience in documentary photography or photojournalism;

• A high level of motivation;

• English language skills (the workshop is in English);

• A good technical understanding of your camera equipment, a working knowledge of the media environment and basic image management skills.

 To apply you need to send a PDF file not exceeding 6 MB including:

• A CV including your contact information and a written text explaining your work and projects. Please clarify your involvement in photography by showing a proven track record, proof of a photographic training or at least 1-year experience of practice;

• Motivation letter in English (1 page);

• A portfolio of max. 30 images with text introductions and captions (please show your story telling skills by presenting at least one picture story of 8 images).

In 1994, when Russia invaded the breakaway region of Chechnya, Yuri Kozyrev, then a freelance photographer, captured some of the most iconic images of the ensuing war. It was too dangerous at the time to live in the Chechen capital of Grozny, which faced heavy Russian bombardment. So he and a group of other reporters (including Marie Colvin, who was killed this year while covering the siege of the Syrian city of Homs) took up residence at a kindergarten called Solnyshka (Sunshine), in the nearby town of Khasavyurt. Lying on the border between Chechnya and the neighboring Russian republic of Dagestan, this town of 130,000 suffered relatively little damage during the war, so journalists, as well as some of the Chechen rebels, used it as a place to rest and resupply before heading back into the war zone.

In June, Kozyrev returned to Khasavyurt to photograph how the town—and its conflict—have evolved. Although heavy fighting ended with the Russian conquest of Chechnya in 2000, the war left behind an Islamist insurgency that Russia still struggles to quell. On an almost daily basis, rebels inspired by a radical sect of Sunni Islam called Salafism continue to clash with security forces in the region, costing hundreds of lives every year. In Khasavyurt, the Russian effort to counter their influence still scars the unpaved streets. In most neighborhoods, gutted homes mark the sites of “special operations,”the commando raids that use heavy artillery to flush out suspected insurgents. But the town has also been shaped by the central element of Russian soft power in the region: the development of wrestling schools. Much like soccer in the favelas of Sao Paolo and basketball in Harlem, wrestling in Khasavyurt is meant to serve as an inoculation against violence, or at least a distraction from it, by offering the local boys an outlet for their frustrations that does not involve ”going to the woods,” the Russian slang for joining the insurgency.

Every year, Moscow pumps roughly a million dollars into Khasavyurt’s five wrestling academies, which have produced an impressive crop of champions. In the past four Olympic cycles, freestyle wrestlers from Khasavyurt have brought home a total of eight gold medals, along with at least 12 world championship titles and countless trophies in national and European tournaments. At the Olympic Games in London, at least two wrestlers from Khasavyurt will compete to affirm the town’s nickname—The Foundry of Champions—which is scrawled on green signs near the central bazaar, showing the legendary Buvaysar Saytiev in the middle of a grapple.

During his visit in June, Kozyrev’s photography focused on Saytiev and his younger brother Adam, who have won four Olympic gold medals in freestyle wrestling between them. For more than a decade, the Saytiev brothers, who are ethnic Chechens, have served as somewhat reluctant poster boys for the notion of pacification through sport. Their wrestling schools have inspired thousands of young men from Khasavyurt to channel their strength into wrestling rather than rebellion, and Kozyrev spent much of his time photographing them train for the London Olympics. But away from the gyms, members of the Khasavyurt wrestling community revealed that the idea of sport as an antidote to extremism is not quite working out as planned. Some of the town’s leading athletes have started “going to the woods” in recent years, and an alarming number of them have been killed as insurgents during shootouts with police. No longer a haven from conflict, the wrestling schools of Khasavyurt, whose students are often as young as 8, have become recruiting ground for Islamists. As Kozyrev concluded after his visit: “This is a town that remains at war.”

Die hervorragende Journalistin Gesine Dornblüth hat eine interessanten Radio Beitrag über die Beschäftigung international aufgestellter PR-Agenturen zur Image-Pflege von Nationalstaaten - vor allem in der westlichen Welt - geschrieben. Auch Georgien und Aserbaidschan werden erwähnt. Sogenannte Kommunikationsprofis werden beschäftigt. Die Fragwürdigkeit solcher Vorgänge wird angesprochen. Andererseits könnnte man den Medien auch den Vorwurf machen, sich kaum darum zu kümmern, da sie ja auch den selben Bewertungsmaßstäben unterliegen, wie das PR-Geschäft und die Lobby-Arbeit. Es gibt keine Kodizes und/oder Standards für die Vorgehensweise. Aber wozu soetwas wieder neu erfinden zu wollen?? Meines Erachtens war das immer der Job von gut ausgebildeten Journalisten, Reportern, Korrespondenten und Freidenkern.

James Hunt hat knapp eineinhalb Jahre lang Imagepflege für Georgien betrieben, bis zum vergangenen Sommer. Er gehört zu den Besten der Branche. Seinerzeit hat Hunt die Krisenkommunikation für Shell im Fall der Ölplattform "Brent Spar" gemacht.

Georgien möchte Mitglied der EU und der NATO werden. Hunts Job war es, dem Land zu helfen, sich im Westen in einer Art und Weise darzustellen, die den Weg Georgiens in diese Institutionen ebnet. Vor einem halben Jahr lief der Vertrag zwischen der Regierung Georgiens und Aspect Consulting aus. Deshalb redet Hunt nun offen über die Arbeit.

"Wir haben die Idee - in Anführungsstrichen - 'verkauft', dass Georgien ein guter und stabiler Partner ist und dass Georgiens Regierung der Demokratie verpflichtet ist.

Die Agentur Aspect Consulting hatte, während sie für die georgische Regierung arbeitete, ständig zwei Mitarbeiter in der Hauptstadt Tiflis. Die gingen in den Ministerien ein und aus.

Wir haben Geschichten mit Nachrichtenwert ausgegraben, die zeigen, wie das Land versucht voranzukommen, und die zeigen, dass Georgien europäisch ist. Die Georgier trinken Wein, sie spielen Rugby und sie haben eine sehr westeuropäische Kultur. Man fühlt sich da nicht fremd. Und das war unsere wichtigste Botschaft, zu kommunizieren: 'Wir sind wie ihr.'"

Einmal schenkte der Präsident Georgiens, Micheil Saakaschwili, gar auf den Brüsseler Behördenfluren Wein aus seinem Heimatland aus. Ein von Journalisten eher belächeltes Ereignis, aber Hunt glaubt, dass es funktioniert hat.

Hunts Agentur Aspect Consulting macht etwa 90 Prozent ihres Gewinns mit PR für Unternehmen. Regierungen sind nur ein kleiner Teil des Kundenstamms. Gegenwärtig hat die Firma nur noch Botswana unter Vertrag."

Ein Unternehmen ist ein Tanker, der lange zum Wenden braucht. Regierungen sind auch große Schiffe, aber sie wenden manchmal sehr schnell. Und das macht uns das Leben viel schwerer - wenn auch interessant. Regierungen ändern ihre Politik über Nacht, wenn sie spüren, dass die Menschen oder die wichtigen Meinungsführer in ihrem Land eine bestimmte Richtung nicht mehr unterstützen."

Aber die Arbeit für Regierungen kann nicht nur interessanter sein, sondern auch moralisch bedenklich. Besonders, wenn die Länder nicht demokratisch sind und permanent Menschenrechte verletzen.

Der Karabach-Abend des Deutsch-Aserbaidschanischen Forums in Berlin ist fortgeschritten. Künstler aus Aserbaidschan musizieren. Kritische Worte bleiben an dem Abend aus. Kein Wort zum Beispiel über die Verurteilung des Bürgerrechtlers Emin Milli in Aserbaidschans Hauptstadt Baku wenige Tage zuvor. Botschafter Parviz Shahbazov ist zufrieden."

Der Abend verläuft sehr gut. Er verläuft konstruktiv und transparent. Das wird einen wichtigen Beitrag leisten zur Information der europäischen Öffentlichkeit."
Die Agentur Edelman, die den Abend organisiert hat, möchte sich zu diesem Thema nicht äußern. Olivier Hoedeman von der lobbykritischen Organisation Corporate Europe Observatory findet, dass die Agenturen es sich zu leicht machen.

"Es gibt keine ethischen Standards oder Kodizes für dieses Tätigkeitsfeld. Im schlimmsten Fall können reiche Regierungen die Wahrnehmung ihrer selbst mithilfe internationaler PR-Agenturen manipulieren. Und dann steht die Qualität demokratischer entscheidungsprozesse auf dem Spiel."

DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY: The famous Magnum Foundation presents YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER IN THE CAUCASUS AWARD (agency.magnumphotos.com)

The Magnum Foundation is pleased to announce it is now accepting submissions for the 2009 Young Photographer in the Caucasus Award. The Award, with a $5000 first prize, recognizes outstanding documentary photography on a matter of social importance by a young photographer living in the Caucasus region. Full eligibility and submission requirements are listed below.

ELIGIBILITY

The Award program is open to all photographers born after June 1, 1975, living in Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, the Republics of the North Caucasus in the Russian Federation (Daghestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, North-Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karatshaevo-Tsherkessia, and Adigey Republic) and the Russian Federation regions of Stavropol Krai and Krasnodar. Existing United Nations standards on nationality and borders will be utilized for purposes of determining eligibility.

Photographers affiliated with the Magnum Foundation or Magnum Photos and their immediate families are not eligible to participate.

Hallo allerseits,
was soll ich sagen? Als ich nach vier Wochen in Russland in Georgien ankam hatte ich das erleichternde Gefühl endlich wieder an einem Ort zu sein, wo man sich prinzipiell frei bewegen kann als Fotograf. Ein dicker Stein fiel gewissermaßen als meiner Fototasche und alles ging sofort ein bisschen leichter. Dieses russische Geheimdienstland, wo nichts ohne und alles nur mit den Schlapphüten zu funktionieren scheint, wenn man dort etwas brisantere Reportagen machen will, hat doch scheinbar seine Spuren bei mir hinterlassen. Dabei ging dieses Mal doch eigentlich alles gut. Ich wurde nicht mit vorgehaltener Waffe zum Inlandgeheimdienst abgeführt. Hört sich nach einer ziemlich anti-russischen Einleitung an. Reicht es vielleicht als Ausgleich, dass Georgien auch noch sein Fett wegkriegt? Wie auch immer, ich kam also vom kalten Geheimdienstrussland ins warme Nachkriegsgeorgien.

Several thousands special troops and police officers are using force against protesters in downtown Tbilisi. People attempt to take refuge in adjacent streets from soldiers armed with batons and water cannons. Tear gas is being used as well. The protesters are in panic.
Georgian riot police fired rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannon on Wednesday to break up a six-day-old rally by protesters demanding the resignation of President Mikhail Saakashvili.
Georgian opposition leaders told U.S. Ambassador John Tefft how the demonstration in central Tbilisi was broken up. "The ambassador promised to us to transfer exhaustive information about the events in Tbilisi to Washington," one of the opposition leaders, Salome Zourabichvili, told journalists.

Президент Грузии Михаил Саакашвили объявил в столице чрезвычайное положение. В связи с чрезвычайным положением в Тбилиси объявлены ограничения на cбор и распространение информации всем электронным и печатным СМИ, кроме Общественного телевидения и проведение каких-либо акций в течении 15 дней. В связи с чрезвычайным положение прекратили информационное вещание проправительственные телекомпании «Рустави 2» и «Мзе».

Georgien möchte die abtrünnige Provinz Südossetien mit einer "alternativen Regierung" zu einer Umkehr ihrer Unabhängigkeitsbestrebungen bewegen. So wird die separatistische Kaukasus-Region von zwei konkurrierenden Präsidenten gleichzeitig regiert.

Diesen Schulhof machte man nach dem Krieg zum Friedhof für die gefallenen südossetischen Helden.
