FUND THIS CAMPAIGN: A Computer School in Pankisi Valley (indiegogo.com)

We built it. We need to run it. More here: www.indiegogo.com
so far: 43 funders
It is very easy to spend a fund for this project!! See here: www.indiegogo.com
$5,319
RAISED OF $7,000 GOAL
14 DAYS LEFT TO:

LOCATION: Duisi, Georgia
CATEGORY: Education

What is the project?
To raise $7,000, to run a computer classroom for a year.
We have built the classroom.
We need to run it.
The donations are for the cost of the IT teacher, IT support and maintenance, building maintenance, fuel for the winter, electricity.

Who are we?
A group of professionals, living and working in the country of Georgia. We manage this project on a totally voluntary basis.

Where is it?
A community of 15,000 people in the remote Pankisi Valley of Georgia, an ex Soviet Republic in the Caucasus Mountains.

Why this project?
To stabilize a region that was once famous for only lawlessness, kidnapping, weapons, drug running and a rise of Islamic extremism. The regions is still isolated. Our original English language education project is highly successful. Computer education is crucial for the children to breakout out and discover the world. We cannot take them beyond their country, but we can bring the world to them.

Why now?
The chaos that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union produced a newly independent Georgia but the country soon collapsed into a failed state. This was taken advantage of by financial and political opportunists, leaving the vulnerable population unable to maintain social order.
We focus on the young 11, 12 and 13-year-old students, teaching social and academic skills to build a stronger society. The opportunity to learn English furthers their education, breaks them out of their physical and social isolation and gives them a larger view of the outside world. The programme has already given the children confidence in themselves.

Why us?
We have been living and working in the area for a number of years and have only local teachers who we hire and train. Our education programme is highly regarded. It’s progress is monitored and evaluated by Telavi University English language faculty and all examinations are conducted through the Soros Foundation headquarters in Tbilisi, Georgia by internationally qualified examiners.
International instructors at the American Academy of Tbilisi train the teachers at their summer language school. The families in the Pankisi know us and our programme. They have confidence in us because they see the work reflected in their children, who are our greatest ambassadors.

Attention: The photos used in this presentation;
are from the generous hand and brilliant eye of Joe Harrison our super energetic volunteer. He is in Duisi now working on the online newspaper with the kids. His loving photos will be soon available as postcards.
Late update.

Here is a link to a small video featuring the wonderful Estonians who built the lab on their weekends.

REVIEW: In Memoriam Alexander Klimchuk, Giga Chikhladze & Stan Storiman

A man shows a wound he said he received during a shootout in the village of Upper Nikozi in the Georgian-controlled part of South Ossetia some 100 km (62 miles) from Tbilisi August 2, 2008.

18. August 2008 von Alexander Klimchuk (killed in the war - Tskhinvali)

Fotostream von Alexander Klimchuk

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Review of Alexander Klimchuks pictures he has taken the last years while working as photographer for european media.
Alexander (Sasha) Klimchuk and his fellow Giga Chikhladze were killed on 08. August 2008 while covering the beginning war in South Ossetia.
Both of them were in the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali and died there on August 8, when their car was fired on. Their relatives and friends are doing everything they can to try and get their bodies delivered home to Tbilisi.
Giga was working for Newsweek and had been employed by a number of publications in Georgia, such as Eurasianet and Civil Georgia. He was 30 and leaves behind his wife Nata and two children, Sopho and Luka. He was the only breadwinner in his family and was also supporting his wife's parents.
Alexander (Sasha) was 27. He began his career as a print journalist, then became a photographer and worked for ITAR-TASS news agency. His pictures were also published in foreign publications such as Le Monde, Newsweek and the Financial Times. He was unmarried. His parents relied on him for an income.
The two, who were great friends, had both worked for IWPR. Giga wrote many stories for the Caucasus Reporting Service on subjects as diverse as Dukhobors, Kurds, AIDS sufferers and ostrich farms. Sasha took photographs that were published in our newspaper Panorama and also formed a photo-exhibition in our office."
I loved working with Giga," said Marina von Koenig, IWPR's former Caucasus director. "He would always try to find interesting angles to stories, talk to lots of people until he was sure that there was nothing he could have missed. He loved to travel on assignment. Even without a commission, he would follow his intuition and bits of information to remote areas of Georgia to return with an exciting story."
South Ossetia was one of the places he went to regularly, coming back with features, interviews or pictures. He had friends there."
Giga was a great nature-lover and once walked all the way from Bakuriani in central Georgia to Tbilisi. He also loved literature. "I heard his parents and neighbours saying that he was quoting Pushkin's poems when he was just three," said Marina. "They loved to retell this story."
Timo Vogt, a German photographer with whom Sasha built the Caucasus-Images agency, said of his colleague, "Sasha often reacted with humour to the problems and difficulties in his country."
Photography became his life. He always approached foreign photographers who visited Georgia, and invited them to his house.
"All the fees he earned as a photographer were spent immediately on his parents who cannot work any longer. Once when he wanted to buy a new lens for his camera, his washing machine broke and the lens had to wait. His family was a priority. He wanted a simple life, he wanted to travel and to take pictures. But his last trip brought him into a war."
Unfortunately Giga and Sasha are not the only journalists to have died in the conflict. A Dutch cameraman, Stan Storiman, 39, was killed in Gori on August 12. At least more than ten journalists have been wounded.
An appeal has been set up to help Giga and Sasha's families.
HUMAN RIGHTs WATCH: Investigate Violations and Protect Civilians.
(Tbilisi, August 18, 2008) – Mounting evidence that Russian and Georgian military used armed force unlawfully during the South Ossetian conflict highlights the need for international fact-finding missions in Georgia, Human Rights Watch said today. Ongoing militia attacks and a growing humanitarian crisis also indicate the urgent need for the deployment of a mission to enhance civilian protection.
At the start of the military conflict on August 7, 2008, Georgian military used indiscriminate and disproportionate force resulting in civilian deaths in South Ossetia. The Russian military has since used indiscriminate force in attacks in South Ossetia and in the Gori district, and has apparently targeted convoys of civilians attempting to flee the conflict zones. Ongoing looting, arson attacks, and abductions by militia are terrorizing the civilian population, forcing them to flee their homes and preventing displaced people from returning home.
"This conflict has been a disaster for civilians," said Rachel Denber, Europe and Central Asia deputy director at Human Rights Watch. "An international security mission should be deployed to help protect civilians and create a safe environment for the displaced to return home. And international organizations should also send fact-finding missions to establish the facts, report on human rights, and urge the authorities to account for any crimes."
Human Rights Watch called on the European Union, with the agreement of the parties, to deploy a robust European Security and Defense Policy (ESDP)mission consisting of police and security forces to ensure protection of civilians and the return of displaced persons to their homes.
Human Rights Watch noted that there are a number of options open to the international community in relation to fact-finding missions. As a first step, the chairman-in-office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) could send a special envoy to Georgia, including to South Ossetia, supported by a team of experts in international humanitarian law, to look at violations.
Human Rights Watch also called on the United Nations to send a team to assess options for a fact-finding mission, and called for consideration to be given to using the International Humanitarian Fact Finding Commission established under Article 90 of Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions, to which both Georgia and Russia are party. Russia has already accepted the competence of the commission. This would be the first time that the commission would carry out an investigation in a conflict, and in line with the treaty provisions, it would have a mandate to investigate serious violations of International Humanitarian Law.
SPENDE (made a donation): Aufruf zu Spenden für Ekaterine
Uniklinikum Jena / Source: MDR
Das Uniklinikum Jena hat zu Spenden für die 16 Jahre alte Ekaterine Mgeladze aus Georgien aufgerufen. Ende Dezember hatten die Ärzte dem Mädchen in einer 13 Stunden dauernden Operation einen lebensbedrohlichen Tumor an der Schädelbasis entfernt.
Nachdem die Familie zunächst die Operation selbst bezahlt habe, werden für die jetzt in der Nachbehandlung nötige Strahlentherapie und die Rehabilitation in Bad Klosterlausnitz rund 50.000 Euro benötigt, teilte die Uniklinik auf einer Pressekonferenz mit. In der Reha müsse Ekaterine nun wieder schlucken, sprechen und viele andere Dinge lernen, um ein normales Leben führen zu können.
Spendenkonto:
AWO Kreisverband Jena-Weimar
Stichwort "Ekaterine"
Konto: 98 000
BLZ: 830 530 30
Sparkasse Jena/Saale-Holzland
Da die Mutter Viktoria Mgeladze arbeitslos sei und der Vater als Bank-Abteilungsleiter in Georgien umgerechnet nur rund 250 Euro monatlich verdiene, sei die Familie mit noch zwei weiteren Töchtern auf Hilfe angewiesen, hieß es. Die Kosten für die Nachbehandlungenund den Aufenthalt der Mutter in Thüringen könne sie nun nicht mehr selbst tragen. Frau Mgeladze werde derzeit von der Arbeiterwohlfahrt unterstützt, die selbst bereits 2500 Euro gespendet habe.
Das krebskranke Mädchen war Ende 2007 nach Jena gekommen, nachdem ihr Fall dem Chirurgen Prof. Stefan Schultze-Mosgau bei einem Besuch in Tiflis, der Hauptstadt Georgiens, vorgestellt worden war. Da die Entfernung des Tumors in Georgien nicht möglich war, hatte er sich für eine Behandlung in Jena eingesetzt.
KULTUR:
SPENDE für das "deutsche Dorf" Helendorf in Aserbaidschan
SPENDENAKTION: Kirchturmuhr "St. Johannis" Chanlar/Helenendorf
17.06.2007 22:37 Uhr
Im Rahmen unserer Spendenaktion "Kirchturmuhr St. Johannis-Kirche" in Chanlar, früher Helenendorf/Aserbaidschan, welche in diesem Jahr das 150. Jubiläum der Kirchweihe erlebt und als Museum genutzt wird, benötigen wir dringend Hilfe. Mit Hilfe eines Uhrmachermeisters aus dem Erzgebirge könnten wir ein neues Uhrwerk für ca. 7 000 EUR installieren. Bisher haben wir jedoch lediglich Spenden von ca. 1.750 EUR sammeln können.
Für jede Art der Hilfeleistungen sind wir dankbar!
"...wir werben zur Zeit für eine neue Kirchturmuhr in Helenendorf (siehe unsere
Vereinsseite), vielleicht kanst Du die Info übernehmen, unsere Bankdaten stehen
dort auch. Zugleich brauchen wir Unterstützung für das Haus von Viktor Klein, der im April verstorben ist und sein Haus der deutschen Botschaft/Regierung vermacht hat, damit daraus ein Museum wird. Das AA grübelt nun, wie es sich entscheiden soll. Wir würden als Träger agieren mit der Gruppe der Helenendorfer, aber Geld ist wie immer wenig da. Etwas öffentliche Unterstützung würde jedoch helfen, um diese Kleinod nicht zu verlieren. [...]
Seit vielen Jahren bereisen wir in kleinen Gruppen Chanlar. Besonders in den letzten beiden Jahren ist im ehemaligen Helenendorf (Chanlar, Aserbaidschan) sehr viel für den Erhalt der traditionellen Bausubstanz getan worden. Mit großer Gastfreundschaft werden die Nachfahren der ehemaligen Bewohner des früheren Winzerdorfes immer wieder empfangen. Nicht geringe Erwartungen gibt es in eine deutsch-aserbaidschanische Zusammenarbeit bei der Entwicklung des Ortes und Landkreises zu einem touristischen Ziel mit überregionaler Bedeutung. Der Stadtkern von Chanlar mit den früheren Hofanlagen und Gesellschaftsbauten, die im südkaukasischen Vergleich einzigartig erhalten sind, die Nähe zum Naturpark Göy Göl, zum früheren Georgsfeld, Annenfeld und zu Kedabeg, wo früher die Firma Siemens Kupfer förderte, bieten gute Voraussetzungen für eine touristische Entwicklung der Region! - In der Hoffnung auf eine neue Zeit aserbaidschanisch-deutscher Gemeinsamkeit wurde die Idee geboren, dieser Entwicklung ein Symbol zu verleihen und nichts scheint sich besser dazu zu eignen, als die St. Johannis-Kirche in Chanlar. Zwischen Schule und Gemeindeplatz stehend, soll sie wieder allen Bewohnern und Gästen der Stadt die Zeit anzeigen und zugleich Menschlichkeit und Toleranz zwischen Religionen und Völkern anmahnen! Hiermit rufen wir alle alten und neuen Freunde Helenendorfs dazu auf, uns bei der Installation einer neuen Kirchturmuhr zu unterstützen! Der Grundstein wurde bereits bei Sammlungen unter einigen Helenendorfern gelegt, aber die aufzubringende Summe reicht lange noch nicht aus. Jeder noch so kleine Betrag - und sei er nur symbolisch - ist willkommen. Wir haben uns mit Hilfe von Gisela Rasper um einen deutschen Uhrmachermeister bemüht, der uns unterstützen wird und die Chanlarer werden ihn bei der baulichen Ausführung mit Kost und Unterkunft unterstützen.
