VIDEO: Georgian Film Posters. By Rupert Wolfe Murray (youtube.com)
On the bus back to the hotel I spoke to an old filmmaker who told me that Georgian film was rather successful under the Soviet Union, and it was known as one of the top producers within the Union. The whole film market was closed to outside films back then and a lot of films were made -- in Russia, Ukraine and Georgia in particular. I confirmed this with a Ukranian trainee who said Georgians were particularly appreciated for their comedy.
All of this is a bit sad as today the film industry in the former Soviet space is a pale shadow of its former self. Ukraine are getting into making TV spots for western clients (bargain hunting production companies in search of rock bottom costs), what few films Russia produces were halted by the financial crisis and in Georgia there is almost nothing going on. And we in the west didn't even know that Georgia has a tradition in filmmaking -- and if we had maybe we should have done something to support it. America has been pumping lots of money into Georgia and maybe a few bucks thrown at the film industry could have saved it (as well as Hollywood being given some incentives to locate their next B movies there).
The Georgian Film Studios offer modern filmmaking studio facilities at prices that are about half what Romania (once the cheapest place to produce in Europe) now charges. If you are in the film business you should check them out on www.geofilm.ge
Another good contact in Georgia is the "Independent Filmmakers' Association of South Caucuses". They can be found on www.ifasc.org.ge
If you would like to see more images from Georgia, or Romania, Serbia and Kosovo for that matter you should subscribe to this YouTube page. Don't worry about being inundated; I only put one or two things online every month
I am also a recent convert to Twitter and can be followed @wolfemurray
Hope you enjoy the posters and I would like to hear your feedback.
Regarding the music, you may have noticed that I've credited Martin Medeski and Wood with a blues song I had wanted to use. But those pesky folks at YouTube forbade me to use the song as its not licenced to them, but they have this cool "audio swop" functionj whereby you choose from their list of approved songs -- most of which I've never heard of. I finally chose Mozart.

POLITICS: What Should Be the Approach of the Tagliavini Commission? (geotimes.ge)
The Commission’s sole objective is to establish what took place in August and what facts and circumstances led to such developments. Why did the war start? What was the background to the conflict? What happened during it? These are the main questions members of the Commission are addressing.
The events before the war are being studied as well as postwar developments. This may be linked to the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption on September 9 of a text recognising the right of return of internally displaced persons throughout Georgia, including Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Initiated by Georgia, the resolution is surely a means to force Russia to fulfill its obligations stipulated in the August 12 2008 ceasefire agreement brokered by then-EU President Nicolas Sarkozy. This called for both Russian and Georgian troops to move back to their original positions.
For Georgia, the danger is that the final document will focus mostly on the period between August 1st and August 7th. If it is given such an emphasis it is quite likely that the report will put most of the responsibility for last year’s events on Georgia. Indeed, the Commissioners will have a hard time questioning the active role played by Georgia in “de-freezing” the conflict. Needless to say, the Kremlin insists in its arguments on the importance of these convulsive days which were marked, it pretends, by a string of provocations from the Georgian side. However, none other than the Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is providing Georgia with compelling counter-arguments should the Commission’s conclusions put the burden of responsibility on Tbilisi or stress the preceding few days in its explanation for the outbreak of the war.

OPEN LETTER: Europe must stand up for Georgia (guardian.co.uk)
As Europe remembers the shame of the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact of 1939 and the Munich agreement of 1938, and as it prepares to celebrate the fall of the Berlin wall and the iron curtain in 1989, one question arises in our minds: Have we learned the lessons of history? Put another way, are we able to avoid repeating the mistakes that cast such a dark shadow over the 20th century?
To deplore or celebrate past events is a futile act if we remain blind to their lessons. Only if these events teach us how to act differently – and more wisely – do such commemorations have any value.
Looking at Europe today, it is abundantly clear that history has not come to an end and that it remains tragic. Twenty years after the emancipation of half of the continent, a new wall is being built in Europe – this time across the sovereign territory of Georgia.

ARTICLE: Bruce Willis More Like Putin Than Saakashvili (themoscowtimes.com)
Summertime in Georgia has eased by lazily without the grim prophecies of a renewed confrontation with Russia being fulfilled. But while the guns have generally remained silent, filmmakers have been keeping themselves busy with cinematic interpretations of last year’s firestorm. The latest attempt to offer the “truth” about the August 2008 war is a documentary called “Russian Lessons,” and unlike previous Russian-made efforts, it has been receiving some positive notices in the Georgian media.
This is partly because one of its directors, Andrei Nekrasov, is hardly a Kremlin apologist. (His last film was about the Alexander Litvinenko poisoning scandal). In contrast to the ludicrous battlefield thriller “Olympus Inferno” and the partisan documentary “War 08.08.08: The Art of Betrayal,” Nekrasov’s movie apparently provides “overwhelming evidence of a Russian imperialist plot,” according to Georgian television station Rustavi-2. In other words, it backs the Georgian interpretation of the showdown over South Ossetia.
SYMPOSIUM: ODESSA TRANSFER
Donnerstag, 24. September 2009

Why Wasn't Iran Invited To Caspian Summit? An interesting event is taking place in Kazakhstan's Caspian port city of Aktau starting September. The Caspian littoral states are holding a first-ever "informal" summit. But one of the countries -- Iran -- has not been invited. Also, there seems to be an unusual sense of urgency on the part of some of the leaders who will be in Aktau. At the same time, however, Kazakhstan officials have suggested there is no set agenda. So what's about to happen in Aktau? More

Marika Lapauri-Burk & Dr. Frank Tremmel

ANALYSIS: Can Russia Win the Ideological Battle in Georgia? By Kornely K. Kakachia (ceres.georgetown.edu)
Kornely K. Kakachia
Tbilisi State University
September 2009
Georgia has been one of the most vocally independent-minded countries among the Soviet Union’s successor states. As Georgia’s ambitions to draw closer to Europe and the transatlantic community have grown, its relations with Russia have deteriorated. After the Rose Revolution, Russian-Georgian relations remained problematic due to Russia’s continuing political, economic, and military support for the separatist movements in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Nonetheless, Georgia sought to maintain good relations with Russia, despite the evidence that various Russian political and military forces rejected Georgia’s state-building project as contradictory to Russia’s national interests.
Russia is uncomfortable with Georgia’s democratic and independent nature, as well as with the West’s close ties to a country within Moscow's “legitimate” sphere of influence. Moscow worries that the successful integration of Georgia into Euro-Atlantic structures may cause Russia to lose influence and credibility not only in the Caucasus, but throughout the post-Soviet space. Georgia has demonstrated in recent years that there can exist in the Caucasus a functioning modern democratic state, one in which the economy can develop without government interference and where corruption does not reign. An economically and politically stable Georgia, which might, in the long run, become a successful Eastern European country, can be a model for development that other post-Soviet states, as well as Caucasian republics within the Russian Federation, might emulate. To the Kremlin, this scenario is a dangerous, and potentially costly, zero sum game.

ART: Superstar in Love. New Drawings by Salome Machaidze
Result of all was the catalog from the magnum photographers about Georgia. We agree each other that this book is a great document about different aims in this official project. You can see there different point of views about Georgia. I think for the Georgian Government is this exhibition not really a success but for the western world is it a good quality ... Maybe this photos could be a "picturesque turn" for the daily life there ...
Late in the evening Nini told me more about Salome Machaidze. She has published in facebook her new drawings. At the time Salome is living in Berlin. Last year we invited her for an exhibition in Leipzig. But now you can see her new works here.
