The career of Georgian graphic artist Ia Chkhaidze began in fashion design. The influence of the world of fashion is apparent in her heightened sense of beauty, and in the duality of movement and stasis that underlies her work. Chkhaidze is a visual narrator, using ink to tell stories, not linearly, but rather multidimensionally. The overarching theme of her work is the exploration of emotion as the definer of human experience. Yet she tells the story of a world that is not overwhelmed by the mystery and confusion of raw, unfettered emotions, but rather finds balance in its very chaos. She uses line and contour to create symmetry between multiple, often surprising, elements. Her subjects interact as if invisible to one another – existing simultaneously in two distinct yet connected emotional realms.
Ia Chkhaidze was born in Tbilisi, Georgia. She studied fashion design at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State Univeristy and in 2005, co-founded the Bisoni fashion house. Her career in graphic design began in 2006 and has since been the primary focus of her work.
