MUSIC: Russudan Meipariani - Musician from Georgia (russudan-meipariani.com)

I was born in 1975 in Tbilisi, Georgia. After finishing my piano education at the Tbilisi State Conservatory in 1999, I moved to Germany in order to study composition with Wolfgang Rihm and Sandeep Bhagwati at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik (Academy of Music) in Karlsruhe.
During these years, I founded the Daphioni Piano Trio in collaboration with my sister Natalie Meipariani and her husband Giga Khelaia. Together we recorded two albums with, amongst others, pieces by Schumann and Shostakovich and performed on tours and contests all around Europe, Georgia and Japan. From 2003 to 2004, I studied composition with Lasse Thoresen at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. During this time, I started to particularly focus on the human voice and began to write pieces of music based on onomatopoeic experiments with my own voice. My music comprises elements of Georgian, Scandinavian and Indian folklore as much as elements of classic, rock, minimal and medieval music.
In Oslo, I had the pleasure to meet with the Tindra Trio, an ensemble performing traditional Norwegian music. In November 2009, we have made together a tour in Georgia.
In 2007, I recorded the first album of my own songs, together with some other artists: “Lieder aus einer Insel” (“Songs from an Island”). Subsequently, I wrote a couple of “Erdlieder” (“Earth songs”) – a capella songs, dealing with different kinds of polyphony, as well as the music fairytale “Das Mädchen auf der Windwelle” (“The girl on the windwave”), a tale of metamorphosis, mainly inspired by Claudio Monteverdi’s “Orpheus” and the music and singing of the Solomon Islands. Records of both of these projects are in preparation.
In 2008, my four-part “Hymnus” premiered in the Stiftskirche in Stuttgart, performed by the vocal arts ensemble.
During my time as an “artist in residence” at the Villa Sträubli (Switzerland), I composed music for a documentation about the Swiss artist Bettina Eichin, directed by Clemens Schmidlin.
The Russudan Meipariani Ensemble currently consists of Natalie Meipariani, Giga Kheliaia, David Stützel and me. In 2009, the Russudan Meipariani Ensemble won the Creole Weltmusikwettbewerb südwest (“Creole World Music Contest southwest”).

Parallel to her classic piano education, Russudan Meipariani began to compose her own pieces for piano and voice in 1994 and performed them together with varying artists. Besides Russudan Meipariani (piano, voice), the ensemble currently consists of her Sister Natalie Meipariani (violin, voice), her sisters’s husband Giga Khelaia (cello), as well as sound artist David Stützel. The jury of the Creole Contest Südwest 2009 described the Russudan Meipariani Ensemble as follows:
„With piano and an onomatopoetic art of the voice Russudan Meipariani has created her own language to improvised songs, which she fills with syllables of fanciful fabulating skill: presenting a range of mischievous quavering to rebellious jubilating sounds that then open into a smoothly gliding flight through lyrical atmosphere. She attained her expertise under the guidance of the composer Wolfgang Rihm, an exchange programme in Oslo and in seminars of her Indian teacher Sandeep Bhagwati. Russudan’s sister, Natalie, enhances the exceptional compositions with her broad oscillating motions on the violin; furthermore, Giga Khelaia plays the cello – with both musicians she also forms the Daphioni Piano Trio. David Stützel deepens the finely shaped texture by engaging with overtone singing and a musical saw. It is a fascinating mix of Caucasian archaic, Jazz, Early and New Music.“

Russudan Meipariani wurde 1975 in Tiflis geboren. Nach dem Abschluss am Konservatorium Tiflis im Fach Klavier kam sie nach Deutschland, wo sie Komposition bei Wolfgang Rihm in Karlsruhe studierte. Ein Jahr lang war sie als Austauschstudentin für Komposition an der Osloer Musikhochschule.

Seit 1998 spielt sie im Daphioni Klaviertio, das Preisträger bei mehreren internationalen Kammermusikwettbewerben wurde, und mit dem sie in Europa, Georgien und Japan konzertierte.

Russudan Meipariani ist Kompositions-Preisträgerin der Wettbewerbe Pamina und Close encounters. Sie war Teilnehmerin beim Schweizerisch-Georgischen Festival für Zeitgenössische Musik, wo sie sowohl eigene, wie auch die Musik anderer zeitgenössischer Komponisten aufführte.

Seit 2003 beschäftigt sich Russudan Meipariani intensiv mit der Stimme, ihren Ausdrücksmöglichkeiten und unterschiedlichen Gesangstechniken. Außer Klassik bezieht sie in ihre Musik die georgische Polyphonie wie auch skandinavische traditionelle Musik, Jazz und Minimal Music ein. Ihr Gesang ist zumeist lautmalerisch.

Zur Zeit führt sie ihre eigene Musik zusammen mit dem Russudan Meipariani Ensemble auf, 2007 veröffentlichte sie ihre erste CD, 2009 gewann das Ensemble den Weltmusik Wettbewerb Süd-West "Creole".
Seit Neuem spielt sie in dem Duo Veli Ulevi.

2008 war Russudan Meipariani als "Artist in residence" in der Villa Sträuli in Winterthur, dort schrieb sie die Musik zum Film von Clemens Schmidlin über die Schweizer Bildhauerin Bettina Eichin. Ebenfalls in dieser Zeit arbeitete sie zusammen mit dem Ensemble Vocal Arts von Angelika Lutz.
