Poets and writers from Armenia, Georgia, Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkey are invited to submit poems, short stories and creative essays for publication in the book "Our First Element: Caucasian Water." Deadline: February 5.
The book will include photographs by Caucasian photographers, old legends, water ritual and celebration stories, proverbs and quotes, contemporary poems and short stories. Entries can display the human relationship to water or refer to any water issue in the Caucasus region.
The 20 best works will be published in the book in the Armenian and English languages.
The publication is supported by The Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets in Armenia.

Caucasus magazine seeking environmental articles
The quarterly magazine Caucasus Environment is looking to publish articles that cover global environment problems, lifestyle, travel and ethnic groups. Each article should be accompanied by eight or more high quality photos. Deadlines are July 7 and August 9.
Articles must be written in English or Russian. Only articles developed especially for the magazine and never published before will be accepted.
Authors of articles selected for publication will receive honorarium between US$60 and $100.

REPORT: Media Rights Institute releases reports on 2007 media issues in Azerbaijan
The Media Rights Institute in Azerbaijan has released reports on access to information, defamation and freedom of expression in the country during 2007. The reports emphasize the importance of freedom of information for democracy, the elimination of poverty, the sustainability of social justice and the fair distribution of gross earnings.
Journalists from the Caucasus Region (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Russia) are encouraged to submit their best print, radio, and television stories on conservation issues to the International Center for Journalists’ Biodiversity Reporting Awards. Works must be published or broadcast between July 1, 2007 and May 31, 2008. The deadline to enter is June 6.

A photo contest in the Caucasus region will soon open a call for submissions of photographs that relate to peace and human rights. The official theme of the contest is “I – Human.” Submissions will be accepted from May 1 to July 1.
Prizes will be awarded in four categories: best portrait, best composition, best photo story, and best idea. Amateur and professional photographers from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia are eligible to submit entries.
Selected photographs will be exhibited at the Nato Vachnadze House Museum in Kakheti, Georgia, from July 26 to 28. An awards ceremony will be held on July 26.
The contest is being organized by regional newspaper Voice of Kakheti and the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs, and is being held in conjunction with the South Caucasus Documentary Film Festival of Peace and Human Rights.
