U.S. and Bulgaria close to military base agreement

Bulgaria and the United States are close to reaching a deal that would result in the deployment of 2,000 to 3,000 U.S. forces to three military bases in Bulgaria. Discussions began back in December 2003 as part of a planned force realignment, that includes strengthening ties with eastern European nations and other Black Sea states like Rumania and Georgia. With the Soviet threat of a European invasion now well in the rearview mirror, the necessity to readjust to confront today's threats and security challenges is paramount.
