Eka Mazmishvili is the producer of the Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre of Tbilisi, one of Georgia’s foremost theatre companies. Founded in 1928 by celebrated director Kote Marjanishvili, the company have established a reputation for creating inventive theatre and for finding humour in the bleakest of situations. This December and January they return to London for a few days only to appear at the Arcola Theatre with two shows. Hilda runs in Studio 1 on 30 and 31 December 2008, and Le Ronde appears in Studio 2 on 2 and 3 January 2009. We were lucky enough to speak to Eka and get a glimpse into the history of the Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre, and this project.

Marjanishvili State Drama theatre was founded in 1928 by the great theatre director and reformer Kote Marjanishvili. Using established Georgian theatrical traditions, Marjanishvili created a modern style of theatre, declaring “the aim of art is quite simple: to give happiness and instil courage in humans”.
Our company comes from Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and a city whose intellectual and cultural life has always centred on the theatre. From the very beginning, the Marjanishvili theatre company was of the first rate: the legendary actors who created an entire epoch of Georgian theatre were performing here and the names of many well-known stage directors, designers and composers are tightly linked with the history of Marjanishvili Theatre.
The performances were characterized by expressive diversity and the high quality of the directing. Original Georgian works, as well as the best examples of European Drama, have always represented the core of Marjanishvili Theatre’s repertoire.
In 2006, after a three year pause, during which the theatre building underwent renovations, Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre began working with artistic director Levan Tsuladze, a leader of a new generation of theatre in Georgia. He is a highly successful stage director and the founder of the famous “Basement Theatre”– the first independent theatre company in Georgia, established in 1997.
In 2008 Levan Tsuladze created a new experimental studio called ‘Stage Under The Roof’ in Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre, specifically designated for artistic experiments and new projects. The first performance in this new space was Le Ronde, which became very popular with audience and critics. We are very excited to bring this work to London.
