PHOTOGRAPHY: Project 'I had left my home early in the morning'. Georgia - Armenia, 2015 - 2019. By Lilit Matevosyan

This project is documentary research of the past, realized through the prism of personal history. Based on memories from my childhood, I create an autobiographical visual journey to places that used to be my home.
The Immigration topic allowed me to go beyond my personal story — it is not only about the history of a particular family, but about entire generations of people living in the Caucasus after the collapse of the Soviet Union who was forced to flee their to seek a better life.

My goal is to try to reconnect, to find lost roots, to learn more about the present in the past. (Lilit Matevosyan)

Slideshow was produced in the frame of Multimedia Lab Production Grant Program for South Caucasus Female Photographers May-October 2019 mentored by Justyna Mielnikiewicz / MAPS. Multimedia Lab aims to support the professional strengthening of emerging women photographers of South Caucasus region that cover social issues in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan and use the medium of photography as the powerful tool of storytelling. The project is financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

Photographic works reflecting the plight of generations forced into migration throughout the South Caucasus following the dissolution of the Soviet Union will go on display at Tbilisi's Untitled Gallery later this week, celebrating the work of photographer Lilith Matevosyan.

Presenting an "autobiographical visual journey" throughout locations she called her home throughout the years, Matevosyan will exhibit photos that use personal history as a prism on the generational transformation created by the collapse of the USSR in the 1990s.

The Sochi-based photographer said her goal with the work was to "reconnect, find the lost roots and learn about the present while searching for the clues in the past".

The selection of works is titled I had left my home early in the morning, with the photographs produced as part of the Tbilisi Photography & Multimedia Museum's 2019 project for supporting women photographers of the region. Led by Justyna Mielnikiewicz, a Tbilisi-based, award-winning Polish photographer, the grant for women was held as part of the multi-year Photography Hub for Education and Innovation, a project of the TPMM supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation via the Embassy of Switzerland in Georgia.

In the TPMM grant Mielnikiewicz mentored Matevosyan [instagram], who told her social media followers in November she was "really happy" to have her long-term project published by the museum. Works produced as a result of the grant - by Matevosyan and six other women photographers from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia - were also exhibited at the museum earlier this month to shed the light on social issues in their respective countries.

Growing up in a famous Georgian artist Ancestry royal family, was faced early on with the pianist in the world of culture, has many inspirations take in, process, and continued to develop artistically quickly.

First performances at age 5 years. She studied piano in Tbilisi, Georgia at the music school.

At the age of 16 you got the special prize "Discovery of Festival" at the Festival 'Margarita 96'

As a scholarship student of the Berklee College of Music in the U.S., she composed the first works.

Since 2007, she received a scholarship from the Yehudi Menuhin launched "live music now" and in 2009 Fellow of a DAAD scholarship. Critics wrote about her: "If the pianist Nestan Bagration-Davitashvili occurs, we see how" music borders "s passed by our ears, how to approach seemingly different genres of music at the end, come together, or also be attributed to their common ground. Nestan Bagration-Davitashvilis music is an open-hearted commitment to the origins of mankind. It needs no words, phrases or a specific language. Alone satisfy her syllables to express all human emotions of joy and pain. But one thing will lead like a red thread through the concert tonight: the highest intensity of her presentation.

"Their music does not quote, it is new. It takes in everything around us and includes it in a new way: noise, sound, music. Their energy comes from the stomach and catapulted himself through the heart and intellect. She sings, reads, plays … " And it is the comprehensive training and mental penetration because, Nestan Bagration-Davitashvili knows exactly what paths are going in the interpretation and music scene.

Your analysis skills are overwhelmed their intuition in every way. It has to develop in recent years, their own personal style that can be difficult to define. Kaukasische Polyphonien und Folk aus Georgien

Oberhalb des Shinwali-Stausees am Ufer des Flusses Aragwi, ca. 65 km von Tiflis entfernt liegt seit dem 13. Jahrhundert die Festung Ananuri an der historischen georgischen Heerstraße. Der Komplex umfaßt religiöse, weltliche und militärische Gebäude und trotzte über die Zeiten allen persischen und osmanischen Invasionen. Dieser Ort wurde 2007 auf der Liste der UNESCO Welterbestätten aufgenommen. Das Ensemble Ananuri gründete sich 1995 zunächst als kleine Formation unabhängiger Künstler und hat sich nach diesem historisch wichtigen Ort benannt. Seit 2002 arbeitet es als Oktett, zu dem seit 2004 auch zwei Musikerinnen gehören. Im Jahr 2000 veröffentlichte Ananuri seine erste CD und dann folgte 2004 eine weitere Aufnahme mit 14 georgischen Volksliedern. Ananuri gibt regelmäßig Konzerte in Georgien, aber auch in verschiedenen Ländern Europas und Asiens. Das Ensemble widmet sich vor allem den profanen georgischen Musiktraditionen, zu denen mindestens 15 regionale Stile zählen. Zu den ältesten Stilen gehört die berühmte polyphone Chortradition. Sie zeichnet sich durch Elemente freier Vokal-Improvisationen aus, da sie seit dem 17. Jahrhundert stark von der modalen persischen Musik beeinflußt wurde. Aber auch in der instrumentalen Musik Georgiens finden sich uralte persische Wurzeln: improvisatorische Elemente des Spiels und die Namen der typischen georgischen Instrumente verweisen auf direkte Nähe zu ihren persischen „Ahnen“. Seit dem 10. Jahrhundert ist die Panduri in Georgien bekannt. Diese dreisaitige gezupfte Schalenlanghalslaute wird im Osten Georgiens überwiegend zur Begleitung von Liedern und Tänzen gespielt wird. Der Name geht zurück auf die sumerische Bezeichnung für Langhalslauten pandur. Die seltenere georgische Langhalslaute tari mit einem tiefbauchigen Korpus ist eine Übernahme der persischen tar oder setar. Im 12. Jahrhundert werden schon die georgische Winkelharfe Changi (persisch: tschang) und die zweifellige zylindrische Röhrentrommel Doli (persisch: dabdabe) erwähnt.

Das Repertoire von Ananuri besteht aus polyphonen Liedern für drei Stimmen, begleitet von den Langhalslauten in verschiedenen Stimmungen Fanduri, Panduri und Chonguri, der Rohrflöte Salamuri, der kaukasischen Oboe Duduk und A-capella Stücken. In der georgischen Musik hat sich bis heute eine einzigartige Verbindung des georgisch-orthodoxen Christentums, das im 4. Jahrhundert zur Staatsreligion erklärt wurde mit heidnisch-magischen Vorstellungen und Rituale erhalten, in denen der Glauben an Geister eine Rolle spielt. So spiegeln die kunstvoll faszinierenden Stücke von Ananuri auch Facetten solch uralter Bräuche wider, in denen Mächte der Totenwelt Opfergaben erbracht wurden oder andere mythische Legenden.

GEORGIAN POLYPHONY: Pearls of Georgian Chant / Artem Erkomaishvili

In 1966, Georgian folklorists, Prof. Grigol Chkhikvadze and Kakhi Rosebashvili invited the accomplished chanter Artem Erkomaishvili to Tbilisi State Conservatoire for the recording session of old Georgian sacred hymns.

The recording was performed with two tape-recorders in the so-called 'combined' manner. The first-voice part was recorded on tape-recorder and Artem tuned the second and bass parts to the top voice which was recorded with the second tape-recorder.

This way the unique recordings of all three parts of about 107 chants performed by the 79-year-old Artem survived; the recordings were cleaned, processed and the voice-parts were mixed as part of the joint project of Georgian Chanting Foundation and Tbilisi State Conservatoire.

The CD includes 37 selected chants.

Book Description:
In the book My Grandfather, Artem Erkomaishvili, the musical biography of the great Georgian singer-chanter Artem Erkomaishvili is described.

He was born to a traditional family of singers in 1887. He finished school for chanters and became a professional chanter thereafter (he knew more than 2,000 hymns). After the October Revolution, chanting was forbidden in Georgia. Artem formed a choir in Batumi that won in the first Olympiad of the Republic. Since that time, Artem Erkomaishvili’s choirs have always deserved the highest appraisals.

Though Artem experienced a difficult life that was quite painful and tragic, he channeled his talent in order to persevere. The book also comprises quite a few references about old singers-chanters.

This book informs readers about old traditions and customs like the Georgian New Year, Christmas, and Easter holidays. It also contains information on the rules for performing the traditional songs “Batonebo” (a healing song), “Alilo” (a Christmas song), “Elesa” (a work song), etc.

The book is also interesting in terms of its ethnographic point of view. Cultural activities such as tree cutting, wine-making, the distillation of spirits like Russian vodka, Japanese sake, and Georgian araki, the raising of the silkworms, or the carving of the chonguri (traditional Georgian musical instrument) are described and detailed within this monograph.

The musical epoch of Artem Erkomaishvili’s period, which was full of severe repressions under the Communist regime echoes throughout the pages. Church hymns, traditional songs, and anything connected to this question was strictly banned. Artem Erkomaishvili and his followers saved Georgian songs chants at their own risk. It is Artem’s outstanding contribution to the recognition of the Georgian polyphony as a masterpiece by UNESCO. The book will act as a detailed reference for folklorists, and lovers of Georgian folk music will enjoy it very much. (Nova)

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC: Neues von der Georgischen Musikerin Russudan Meipariani

Russudan Meipariani's Soloprogramm ist in georgischer Sprache und vertont Lyrik von Galaktioni. Im Herbst 2017 gab es zum ersten Mal eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Tbilisi Contemporary Ballet, dem progressivsten Tanzensemble Georgiens tbilisiballet.ge. Die Choreographie zu Russudans Vertonungen wurden im November 2017 in Tiflis uraufgeführt und begeistert aufgenommen. Nun soll die Zusammenarbeit fortgesetzt und erweitert werden- zur Buchmesse kommt das Ensemble nach Deutschland und es wäre ein spannendes, interdisziplinäres Experiment und ein Brückenschlag zwischen den Welten, mit zeitgenössischen Texten zu arbeiten und deren musikalische Umsetzung durch Russudan als Choreographie aufzuführen...

(geotrain.eu) September 2015 wurde die Gruppe in Deutschland von Zurab J. Gagnidze und Mamuka Ghaghanidze gegründet, die beide seit 2002 in Deutschland zusammen mit Bekannte Formation The Shin arbeiten. Die in Deutschland lebenden Musiker gehören mehrheitlich zur künstlerischen Elite Georgiens, haben mit internationalen Größen wie Randy Brecker, Giora Feidman, Gia Kancheli, Jorge Pardo, Chaka Khan, Okay Temiz, Fuat Saka zusammengearbeitet, mehrere Workshops in Polyrhythmik, Improvisationstheorie und georgischer Mehrstimmigkeit abgehalten, sowie bei zahlreichen internationalen Festivals aufgetreten.

Für das neue Projekt „GeoTRAIN“ konnten die beiden Paata Demurishvili aus Mannheim gewinnen, den das Jazz Podium als einen „der besten Pianisten Europas“ bezeichnet hat.

Der Klangteppich der GeoTRAIN entsteht durch die Begegnung des musischen Georgien mit der Musik Verschiedener Länder und Kulturen. Berühmte georgische Mehrstimmigkeit und instrumentale Virtuosität entfalten sich im Austausch mit Jazz Scat, Funk und Fusion, Indien, Ravel... Wie klingt es? Raffiniert, überraschend, modern, witzig, heiter und einfühlsam.

Leon Lolishvili, a.k.a. Boyd Schidt is a georgian electoronic producer and DJ, better known as a half of the long-running techno duo Greenbeam & Leon. As a solo artist, Boyd Schidt's career dates to 2010, with releases on Front Record, Mo's Ferry and Emote Music. In 2014, he released "Mornig Utopia" as a part of Studio R°'s "Various 003", alongside Mike Parker, Brendon Moeller, Zadig, Exercise One, followed by next 12", "Structure EP" on Waveform. Nowadays, Georgia's techno pioneer is still actively engaged in the process of composing music and Djing around the world, therefore contributing to the advancement of electronic music scene in Georgia.

tapetenwechsel geht in die erste Runde.

1 Abend.
3 Wohnungen.
3 MusikerInnen.
3 KünstlerInnen.

Drei Wohnungen in der Könneritzstraße öffnen für einen Sonntagabend (17:30 - 21 Uhr) ihre Türen. Bei Musik & Kunst erwartet euch ein gemütliches Zusammensein von Freunden, Freundesfreunden und allen, die das werden wollen.

In jeder Wohnung warten - neben den Gastgebern - eine KünstlerIn und ein(e) MusikerIn auf euch, die mehrere Sets an einem Abend spielen. Ihr entscheidet also selbst, welche Wohnung ihr zuerst besucht und wohin ihr danach weiterzieht.

Die Spenden werden zu 100% an die KünstlerInnen und MusikerInnen der jeweiligen Wohnung weitergegeben. Wir danken euch schon jetzt für eure Unterstützung.

Ein gemütliches Zusammensein von Freunden, Freundesfreunden und allen, die das werden wollen. Tapetenwechsel will die Distanz zwischen KünstlerInnen und ZuschauerInnen überwinden. Also weg mit dem Objektfetisch! Weg mit der großen Bühne! Und ran an die Kunst!

In her 23 Sophie Villy is well known for her unique performing style. Minimalistic arrangements, vintage guitar's distinctive twang and soulful timbre of voice open up another deep world, full of grace and intelligence, nurtured in the bohemian quarters of Georgian culture. Artists were common visitors to Sophie's childhood home in Tbilisi, they undoubtedly left their mark. We hear, as a result, both the voices of modern neighbors and the echoes of twelfth-century poet Shota Rustaveli. Grounded in that multifaceted heritage, Sophie's debut album "Mother Fish" now takes a wide range of private stories to the outside world. The singer and her catalog are one and the same: wholly sincere and full of incisive observations.. You can feel a kind of 'eastern' power, even spirituality, within her work. (tff-rudolstadt.de-2014) Bereits 2011 war der Freiburger Beatboxer Paul Brenning als Hälfte des Duos Papaul bei der creole Südwest erfolgreich. Im selben Jahr begann er eine Zusammenarbeit mit der aus dem Iran stammenden Sängerin Parissa Eskandari. Bei ihren Auftritten wird geloopt und mit Stimmeffekten sowie Projektionen gearbeitet. Ziel ist ein „Klangkosmos, der die Genregrenzen zwischen Pop, HipHop, Folklore, Indie oder Electronica ignoriert und mit viel Pop-Appeal seinen eigenen Sog entwickelt.“ Die creole-Jury befand: „Diese Freiburger Band steht für gelebte kulturelle Vielfalt in einem spannenden dialogischen Elektro-Projekt. Dem außergewöhnlichen Duo gelingt es eine globale Musik abseits ausgetretener Pfade zu machen, persischen Gesang und elektronische Breakbeats in spannenden Schichtungen voller Kreativitiät und Originalität einzusetzen.“

KONZERT: Ethno Jazz Band "ZumbaLand" in München - 23. November 2013

Am Samstag, den 23. November organisiert der Georgische Verein in Deutschland e.V. mit Hilfe des Konsulats eine gemeinsames Konzert der Ethno- Jazz-Band "ZumbaLand" in München.  

Das Ziel ist die Förderung der georgischen Kultur in Deutschland zu erleichtern, sowie die Förderung von talentierten Künstlern in Europa.
