Georgia: The Gali sector of UNOMIG

Gali Sector comprises the Security Zone and the Restricted Weapons Zone on the Abkhazian side of the ceasefire line. The town of Gali lies in the center of the sector and this is where the UNOMIG Sector HQ is located. Most of the operational patrolling within UNOMIG takes place in the Gali region and it is divided into three patrol Areas of Responsibility (AOR). These are India , Hotel and Golf patrols. Typically, four patrols are launched each day and this is frequently supplemented with a foot patrol in Gali Town . There are 46 UNMOs and 40 civilian staff based in Gali Sector. As with the Zugdidi sector, the essential function of the UN team in Gali is to monitor and observe the security situation.
