NEWS: AZERBAIJAN: A LEADER OF GEORGIA’S ETHNIC AZERBAIJANIS IS ARRESTED IN BAKU (eurasianet.org)

Dashgin Gyulmamedov, the president of the National Assembly of Georgia’s Azerbaijanis, has been detained in Baku, the APA news agency reported on March 11.

Azerbaijani police had been looking for Gyulmamedov since December 2008 on charges of fraud, Sadig Gyezalov, Azerbaijan’s interior ministry spokesperson, told the Regnum news agency. He did not elaborate.

Gyulmamedov has repeatedly accused the Georgian authorities of suppressing ethnic Azeris in Georgia. The National Assembly of Georgian Azerbaijanis has called for making Azeri a state language in Georgia on a par with Georgian and Abkhaz.

Representatives of Georgia’s foreign affairs and interior ministries told EurasiaNet that they were not aware of the arrest.
