Das Buch gibt mit einer Auswahl von 150 Heilpflanzen einen Überblick über die Georgische Volksmedizin. Keine zufällige Auswahl, vielmehr vor allem Heilpflanzen, die auch in Deutschland bekannt sind. Dem Leser bietet sich damit die Möglichkeit, sein Wissen über die Anwen­dungsmöglichkeiten von Heilpflanzen zu erweitern oder auch ganz neu zu schaffen. Erklärtes Ziel des Autors ist es, das Wissen der Volksmedizin über die Wirkung der Heilpflanzen in einfacher und zugleich verantwortlicher Weise zu vermitteln. Zugleich vermittelt er uns damit ein Bewusst-sein zum verantwortungsvollen Umgang mit der Natur und ihren wichtigen Ressourcen auch vor unserer Haustür.

Giray Keloglu knüpft mit seinem Buch über die Volksmedizin in Georgien an eige­ne Traditionen an, wurde sein Großvater doch in Tiflis geboren, sein Vater in Aser­baid­schan. Er selbst erblickte in Kars, in der Türkei, das Licht der Welt, lebt aber bereits seit seinem ersten Lebensjahr in Deutschland, wo er auch Schule und Aus­bildung absolvierte. Sein gesellschaftliches und ökologisches Engagement (Mitglied bei den Grünen, aktives Engagement in den Bereichen Um­weltschutz, Integration, Soziales und Ju­gend) führte ihn näher an Fragen der Volks­medizin und Heilkunde, ließ ihn eine Heilpraktiker- und eine Phyto­therapie-Aus­bildung bei Arnd Groeneveld absol­vie­ren. 2009 begann er mit den Arbeiten an die­sem Buch, seit 2010 mit Unterstützung der University of Rustaveli – Batumi / Georgien, insbesondere mit Prof. Dr. Narthela Varshanidze.

The Open Society Institute (OPI) Documentary Photography Project based NY and Arts and Culture Network Program announce a grant opportunity for documentary photographers from Central Asia, the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Mongolia, and Pakistan. Approximately 20 grants in the amount of $3,500 each will be awarded to photographers to produce a discrete body of work on a current human rights or social justice issue in the region.

Following are some examples of the kind of problems that might be addressed: gender rights, ethnic minorities, migration, religious freedom, free speech, civil liberties, ecological or environmental challenges, urban renewal and transformation, public health, tuberculosis, AIDS, drug policy and narcotics, resource development and exploitation, forced and child labor, domestic violence, corruption and bribery, and restrictions on the freedom of movement. Other social problems, as defined by the applicant, may also be addressed.

We will need your help in distributing this information among the relevant contacts that you may know.

The deadline for proposals is March 20, 2009, at 5:00 pm (Eastern Standard Time).
