Project ArtBeat in Tbilisi presented personal exhibition of Avto Meskhi. The exposition includes mixed media works: collages, paintings and drawings made during 1984-2015. Curated by Natia Bukia.
Avto Meskhi, due to his introvert personality and moreover his tragic life is a lesser-known painter in Georgia and abroad. Accordingly, Private Acquaintance, his solo exhibition held at the gallery exactly a year ago is a very important event for the Georgian art scene.
The artist was born in Tbilisi, 1946 and lived and worked in Tbilisi and Rustavi. When Project ArtBeat discovered Meskhi he was 70 years old, he already had lost his home, where he lived with his mother and was spending last years ...

GEORGIAN ART: Nina Gomarteli interviewed her mother Maka Batiashvili: I Try to Show not Just a Particular Figure I am Drawing, but My Attitude Towards that Figure. via @cbwge
(cbw.ge) Maka Batiashili is a Georgian artist who works in painting, book illustration, and video art. Her inspiration comes from the moments of mundane reality that frequently turn into important visual images. The artist grasps moments from ordinary situations, which find participants on the verge, where keeping a balance is required. The key concept for Maka is a person surrounded by an emotional environment and things that constantly balances the situation, and never cross the lines. CBW had an interview with Maka Batiashvili:
Your exhibition "Moment of Narcissism" has recently opened. Where did the idea for the title come from?
Narcissism is a slowed down or rigid moment when we focus on ourselves, observe our sights or our senses, and at the same time, get very close to our identity, and start controlling it. At this time, everything is distorted, and there is only "me," and nothing else around it. This is one of the pleasures that our brains and bodies constantly seek. These works have been created with this idea underpinning it, which was displayed at the Project Art Beat Gallery.
What was the work process like, and how did you decide to put it together, or when the time for the exhibition was?
I worked until I had something to say; it's easy to just feel like it’s good enough, completed. At the time, I was completely engrossed in this, and not just during the process of drawing, but also in different situations, observing people, how they behaved, how they looked, how they posed for a photo, and so on. The mind fixes the image, and then some part is realized, from the thoughtful state to the material level. At this point, this topic is over for me, and I chose a new theme to work on after a month-long interval, it’s a good feeling for a fresh start.
The process of working, in general, depends on different attributes. It is like being a child, who constantly needs to be amazed and impressed. At this time, I don't think I am trying anything special, I just prefer to convey everything as simply as possible. I try to show not just a particular figure I am drawing, but my attitude towards that figure.
What makes you the most comfortable at this time?
Everything, good lighting, tranquility, a deliberate pace, sounds coming from the street, the sound of the wind, dogs barking, neighbors shouting, kids shouting in the yard. But by no means music, this time it holds my power because the focus is on it.
What was your education like?
I chose to go to the Academy of Arts, without any fuss. I told my family about my decision, and he immediately received my support. We chose a teacher and started to work with him as a student. My painting teacher was Bezhan Shvelidze, who had 20 students like me. It was a workshop near Nutsubidze Street, now called Pablo Picasso Street. Along the way, I realized that this is how I want to spend my entire life. There were no special restrictions here, there was a sense of freedom and a desire to become an extraordinary artist. Here, I could see so many students painting the same exact still life, yet these paintings would have come out entirely different from one another.
My teacher didn't give me a lot of notes, telling me: ‘’you know the most important thing - how to enjoy drawing, and there’s nothing more important... go on and have fun, darling! I’m always observing you, and you seem to be ecstatic; loving what you do, is the case, can’t be taught by a teacher, although one can create an atmosphere, where a student will study for pleasure, rather than obligation.
I was enrolled in the Academy of Arts in 1992, and it is easy to imagine what the situation there was like at the time. There was chaos in every sense, the first shock was that some of my students were not too keen on drawing. And whoever enjoyed it, would look crazy. It's still unclear to me why they chose this university. For a painting I dedicated my entire life to, the teacher didn't show up to the lecture for an entire year, and many other frustrating stories, but it was still so mysterious and appealing. I remember I arrived there hanging on a trolleybus, only to get there somehow…..because it was a meeting place, a strange and unexpected world that allowed for freedom.
Have you met any famous artist that affected your work?
I participated in a group exhibition recently where one of Natela Iankoshvili's paintings was presented. When I stopped by her drawing, fragments of memories would come out. I was 14 years old when I met her at her at the workshop, perhaps a relative of mine had invited me as a guest. Natela and her husband hosted us. For the first time there, I came across huge, distinct drawings in the artist's workplace. I remember how attentive they were to me, to treat me as an adult, and not as a child, they talked to me, showed me around and explained each painting. At some point, Natela and I were left alone, and she said to me: I haven't seen your paintings, but you have such a deep look your eyes, I believe you can be a good artist. Remember, the most important thing is to have your own distinctive style, for people to recognize it’s you. I tried it, and I think it worked. This is the power of words. As for the visual impact, I think all the artists I’ve ever seen contributed, even a bit.
What role do you think your artworks have, or will have in the future?
I'm bringing colors and lines to this, superficially speaking. I'm just looking for something, constantly. In today' s technological era, we have a continuous stream of information that causes information intoxication, from time to time. The righteous and fictional are intertwined, at such times, and I have a desire to find something very simple and frivolous in the world of these skyscrapers. What role it may play in the future will be decided by time, and by the people.
When did you feel like a success?
A sense of success helps people to keep going in all professions. It is an extraordinary feeling of power and motivation, but I felt successful when I stopped caring about it, and as boring as it may sound, I just go with the flow, I draw in this flow, and everything else comes on its own, with no pressure…
In what profession would you imagine yourself, if you weren’t an artist?
I would be an ecologist, I’m very interested in this field. I love and it hurts. It hurts because most of this world consists of air, and we don't have it in our city. Breathing is a symbol of life and it lacks that aspect here, it brings a sense of helplessness, and I have no power to abandon my socially active life and escape from the centre of the city to live in the village.
Project ArtBeat appeared in the art arena just a few years ago, and it’s always in the spotlight. What is it like collaborating with a contemporary art gallery?
I already knew Natia Bukia when it opened, she bought some of my artwork, then I met Salome Vakhania, and was told about their idea; then, many galleries opened up, but it was a bold move on their part. Because it is a complex and financially unsustainable business. I liked this decision a lot, it was very bold, and thoughtlessly joined them. During these 4 years, they’ve implemented many important projects, and Georgian art has been brought to numerous important art markets, worldwide.
Can you share what the subject of your upcoming series is?
It's a fog driven by two contrasting, masses of warm and cold air, the most mysterious grey quilt in atmospheric events.

Posing and fixing our appearance is what we call our daily life. This is a moment when human approaches his or her inner, non-material world most closely or oppositely getting farer, runs away and puts a mask temporary.
It happens when we look at the mirror, when we are at the street and looking at vitrine of shops while we are glancing our reflections on it and especially when we pose at photo shootings.
Today when we live in digital world and own social networks, we have an amazing possibility to represent the best version of ourselves. Here is place where imaginary and real life meets each other and after all everything becomes as information chaos. Represented works are created by observing and speculating with these moods... and narcissism is considered not as a human flaw but as logical expression of personal identity and controlling of own state”. - Maka Batiashvili
Maka Batiashili works in painting, book illustration, video art, documentary film. Her inspiration is derived from the moments of mundane reality that usually turn into important visual images. The artist grasps moments from the ordinary situations, which find participants on the verge, where keeping balance is required. Key concept for Maka is a person surrounded with the emotional environment and things, who constantly balances the situation and never crosses the limits.
Colored spots on a neutral background are clearly readable. Processing of simple shapes of the drawings is easily observable. Works are dominated by bright colors and simple compositions. The pictures created with tusche on paper are charged with energy.

KUNST: Zwei Ausstellungen von Gela Samsonidse in Kenzingen und Neuf-Brisach
Kann Abstraktion narrativ sein und Figuration sich nicht nur auf die reine Gegenständlichkeit beschränken? Gela Samsonidse, der 1965 in Tiflis geboren wurde, dürfte darin keinen Gegensatz sehen. Denn es ist, als würden seine Bilder die vermeintliche Opposition von figurativer und abstrakter Malerei aufheben. Da klettert ein Bergsteiger einen Felsen hoch, der nur aus quer laufenden Balken zu bestehen scheint, in die sich sein eigener Schatten eingeprägt hat. Da verbergen lamellenartige Streifen eine Interieurszene, die links und rechts von bunten, ornamentalen Kringeln flankiert wird. Seitdem Gela Samsonidse in Tiflis sein Studium an der Staatlichen Kunstakademie abgeschlossen hat, war der Georgier, der seit 1994 bei Freiburg lebt, durch seine abstrakten Bilder aufgefallen, nicht zuletzt durch seine Zeichnungen auf außergewöhnlich schmalem Format. Sie schienen ein sowohl als auch zu verbinden, ein davor mit einem dahinter. Nun, zehn Jahre später, vereint er Abstraktion und Figuration miteinander. Die Porträts, oft nach dem eigenen Familienalbum entstanden, darunter auch einige Selbstporträts, sind die radikale Standortbestimmung eines Malers, der viele Gegensätze zwar nicht aufzuheben, aber auf der Leinwand auszutragen vermag.

In seinen Seelandschaften bezieht sich Künstler Giorgi Shengelia auf die Brücke Maler die Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts an der Nordseeküste ihre Expressionichen Meeresstücken malten. Kräftige Farbakkorde, expressive Kompositionen zeichnen Giorgi Shengelias malerischen Stil aus. Genauso wie die Brücke Maler ist Shengelia fasziniert von der Nordsee, deren Darstellungen in seinen Bildern atmosphärisch und abstrakt sind. Die Bildflächen atmen Frische und Freiheit. Farben und Gliederung spielen in seiner Kunst eine große Rolle, die schwarzen Bildränder und Konturen geben den Werken besondere Struktur und Ordnung. In abstrakte Bilder oft hinein gemalte geometrische Strukturen wirken dreidimensional und geben der glatten Oberflächen besondere Dynamik. In unserer Zeit des Klimawandels und der zerstörten Ökosystemen, wo die Meeresspigel ständig steigt und mit Überschwemmungen droht, gewinnen Shengelias Meereslandschaften, wo die grenze zwischen Land und Meer verwischt, eine besondere Aktualität.

Biography
Giorgi Shengelia was born in 1977 in the city of Sukhumi, Georgia. He studied art at the Academy of Art in Tbilisi. In the year 2001 Giorgi fled his homeland out of necessity and he washed ashore in The Netherlands.
Since 2003 Giorgi is living and working in the village of Bergen, in Northern-Holland, a safe haven behind the dunes of the North Sea coast. Here Giorgi makes paintings and mixed media mostly. Besides he is working on installations and sculptures. He is even active in photography.
The amount of subjects Giorgi expresses in his work are endless: nature, city life, landscape, daily life, home, love, food, people, as I said: limitless. As a visual artist he is fascinated by the tensions and clashes between the reality and the artificial, the visual and elusive and the past and the future. The sensitive paintings of Giorgi Shengelia range from abstract to figurative, wildly drawn or with great precision, on canvas, paper or wood. All of varying sizes. His expressive sculptures are mostly made out of steel and objects from the scrap-heap. Making art, celebrating life and living in freedom are Giorgi’s keywords for now and the future.

ART: Tsisia Kiladze - Georgian Painter based in Tbilisi

Tsisia Kiladze was born in 1975 in Tbilisi, Georgia. She studied from 1992 at the Academy of Arts in Tbilisi, specializing in art history and theory. In 1999-2005 she was a Ph.D. student at the National Chubinashvili Institute for Georgian Art History, where she also promoted in 2005. This was followed by a DAAD scholarship and further education at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, 2010 September. Guest stay supported by Academic Swiss Caucasus Net at the University of Friborg, 2011 a one-year scholarship from DAAD scholarship for a research stay at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Further steps were the restoration and conservation of wall paintings in various churches in Georgia, publication of the book on painted staircases of Tbilisi and "Charm of Tbilisi". Since 2009, she has been teaching at the Chair of Art History at the Academy of Arts and since 2012 she has been a research assistant at the Staatliche Kunstmuseum.
As a painter, she is an autodidact and has been actively painting for years. She's on Various exhibitions and lives and works in Tbilisi.
In April (2016) your personal exhibition in Tbilisi took place in the gallery "Baia".

VERNISSAGE. TRUNITY - eine georgisch-österreichische Ausstellung; 8. Juni 19.00 Uhr; Kunstraum am Schauplatz in Wien
Die österreichisch-georgische kollaborative Ausstellung Trunity zielt darauf ab, die Kunstwelt als solche und deren Dimension und Authentizität zu erforschen. Auf den Spuren von Trends (Multimedia, Klangkunst, relationale Kunst etc.) werden weltweit große Kunstproduktionen geschaffen. Diese modischen Tendenzen stimulieren die Inflation von Werken mit wahren Hintergründen und Referenzen und führen oft zu gefälschten und oberflächlichen Positionen. Trunity wird strategisch die Spontanietät und den Austausch zwischen Künstlern aus verschiedenen Gesellschaften (europäisch / transformativ) erforschen und zum Ausdruck bringen - die Beziehung der falschen/wahren Perspektiven in der aktuellen künstlerischen Praxis. Malerei, Skulptur, Sound Performance und neue Medien / Video werden die dominierenden Medien dieses Projekts sein.

AUSSTELLUNG: "Vom Zauber der Realität" eröffnet - Kunstwerke von Rusudan Khizanishvili und Brigitte J. Schaider im Kunsthaus Summerau. Von Olaf E. Jahnke (schwaebische.de)
(schwaebische.de) Rusudan Khizanishvili, und Brigitte J. Schaider haben am Freitag zur Vernissage nach Summerau geladen und etliche Kunstinteressierte sind gekommen. Sie haben sich mit Zauberei und Musik eingestimmt, ein humorvolles Grußwort gab’s von Hans Peter Vollmer.
Khizanishvili ist aus New York angereist und sagt zu ihrer Kunst: „Die Leinwand ist eine Verbindung zu einer phantastischen Welt, in der alle Menschen, Tiere, Pflanzen und Gegenstände Wesen sind.“ Die Georgierin hat 21 Gemälde mitgebracht, die mit kräftigen Farben, vielschichtiger Darstellung, fabelhaften Tierwesen und abstrakter Realität beeindrucken. „Ob Venedig, Wien, New York – oder Summerau, ich schätze die unterschiedlichen Begegnungen, das Interesse an meiner Kunst.“ Zuhause in Tiflis heiße es dann wieder malen, malen, malen. Sehenswert ist nicht nur die Kunst der Georgierin – auch Schaider, die inzwischen ebenfalls international ausstellt, zeigt vielschichtige Darstellungen zum Thema Realität ganz unterschiedlicher künstlerischer Genres.
Die Ausstellung ist bis zum 5. Juni zu sehen und ist samstags, sonn- und feiertags von 11 bis 16 Uhr geöffnet.

(agenda.ge) The bizarre and uncanny work of a Georgian artist, who grew up amidst ethnic conflict in Georgia’s breakaway Abkhazia in the 1990s, is on display at a leading London art gallery.
Switzerland-based Georgian artist Andro Wekua is hosting his 11th solo exhibition and showcasing his latest work, which ranges from paintings, collages, drawings, sculpture and film. His work represented imaginary worlds of mystery and intrigue.
The exhibition, 'SOME PHEASANTS IN SINGULARITY', opened yesterday in its London debut at the Sprüth Magers art gallery and will run at the gallery until November 15.
Among his work were paintings that combined portraiture, abstraction and figuration.
The Georgian-born artist has had a successful career and his work was respected all over the world. His work was often based on his childhood memories growing up in Sukhumi, now in Georgia’s breakaway Abkhazia.
He witnessed the ethnic conflict in Abkhazia in the 1990s. His father was a Georgian political activist and was killed by Abkhaz nationalists during the 1989 Sukhumi riots.

KUNST: Karlo Katscharawa und Deutschland. Ausstellungseröffnung und Präsentation des Katalogs in Georgien
Ausstellung zum 20. Jubiläum des Goethe-Institut Georgien.
Vor 20 Jahren wurde das Goethe-Institut in Tbilissi gegründet. In demselben Jahr, 1994, starb ein knapp über dreißig Jahre alter Kunstkritiker und Künstler namens Karlo Katscharawa in einem Tifliser Krankenhaus an einer Gehirnblutung. Im Lebenswerk dieses zum Zeitpunkt seines Todes noch ganz jungen Mannes verkörpert sich die deutsch-georgische intellektuelle und menschliche Synthese, für die unser Haus steht, auf eine einzigartige und künstlerisch glänzende Weise.
Das Werk Karlo Katscharawas ist entscheidend beeinflusst von den Malern des deutschen Expressionismus und von den Künstlern der neoexpressionistischen deutschen Kunstrevolution der achtziger Jahre in Köln und Berlin. Es zitiert Joseph Beuys, Jörg Immendorf, August Macke, Ludwig Kirchner, Karl-Horst Hödicke. Es atmet den Geist der Märchen der Gebrüder Grimm und der deutschen Romantik. Ohne dass wir es in Deutschland wußten, gab es damals im tiefen Süden der Sowjetunion ein korrespondierendes Mitglied der neuen deutschen Kunst der achtziger Jahre, die wir in den Kölner und Stuttgarter Galerien oder im Berliner SO 36 bestaunten.
Zum 50. Geburtstag von Karlo Katscharawa und unserem 20. Jubiläum eröffnen wir, Irina, unsere gemeinsame Freundin Lika Katscharawa und unsere Partner von der Firma "Silk Road/Zinanadali" ein analoges Projekt mit den großen Leinwänden, auf denen Karlo seine Liebe zur deutschen Kunst und seine spezifisch georgische Weiterentwicklung der deutschen Kultur für die Zukunft - für eine gemeinsame Zukunft unserer Kulturen - dokumentiert und künstlerisch festgehalten hat. Auch diese Ausstellung ist Teil eines deutsch-georgischen Gemeinschaftsunternehmens, für das wir wieder mit "Silk Road/Zinandali" dankenswerterweise zusammenarbeiten dürfen und das ab 11. Oktober nicht nur in Tbilissi für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich wird, sondern auch in Zinandali.
