The Russians declared an end to its military operations in Georgia, but its forces are still occupying the city of Gori and, according to the Georgian government, they have all but established an economic blockade of Tbilisi, the capital. How will the standoff in Georgia play out in the rest of the region? Martha Brill Olcott, a senior associate with the Russian and Eurasian Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, specializes in the problems of the Caucasus as well as in the security challenges in the Caspian region generally. Here are excerpts of her analysis for the Carnegie Endowment.
