Sediments - Anniversary Exhibition celebrating 10 years LIA Leipzig International Art Programme

Many artists work intermittently outside of cultures familiar to them. The LIA residency - Leipzig International Art Programme, has supported this form of artistic nomadism for now ten years. Over 200 artists from more than 40 nations have been through this program, enabling them a working stay of three or six months in the Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei, the former cotton mill - now cultural hub of international renown. For some artists, this opportunity marked a new chapter of their professional life. The change of location, a studio, as well as the supportive benefit of visits from guest critics.

The exhibition, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the LIA residency, focuses on that which the artists, as cultural ambassadors, have taken with them on their journey, and from which they make visible fragmentarily in their Leipzig work - like sediments, deposits of substances; traces that remain after departing elsewhere. In their trans-cultural context, the artists' works become indicators of political, economic or ecological processes, operating as aesthetic speculations of further developments. The exhibition covers all mediums of contemporary art, and shows a selection of works from over 50 international awardees of the LIA programme.

Spontanität geht über geregelte Rahmen und festgeschriebene Gesetze hinaus. Als Eigenschaft wird sie dann als positiv empfunden, wenn man sie aus der Distanz beobachtet und in anderen Kulturen als etwas Authentisches und Emotionales wahrnimmt. Wenn man in Georgien unterwegs ist, so scheint Vieles von Spontanität geprägt zu sein. Spontane Handlungsresultate, die sich weniger auf lang verhandelte Planungen und Konzepte, sondern auf das schnelle Reagieren einzelner Menschen oder Bevölkerungsgruppen beziehen, werden in der Architektur, in der Dingwelt, aber auch in den sozialen Beziehungen sichtbar und erfahrbar. Die „spontane Architektur“ als inoffizielle und ohne Expertise errichtete Bausubstanz findet ihren Ausdruck in verschiedenen Formaten und prägt mittlerweile das Stadtbild von Tbilisi. Kamikaze loggias als eine Erweiterung des Wohnraumes, provisorische Architekturstützen als Schutz gegen den Einsturz von Häusern und spontane Kreuze als Gedenkmonumente ohne Genehmigung im öffentlichen Raum sind einige wenige Beispiele dafür. Sind solche spontanen Formen und Formate der Selbstorganisation eine Reaktion auf ökonomische Missstände oder wohnt diese Art von Spontanität der georgischen kulturellen Identität inne? Ist es der westliche Blick, der diese Spontanität erst als solche definiert? Und wie kann „spontane Architektur“ in künstlerische Arbeiten und in Ausstellungsräume übersetzt werden? 

Das Ausstellungsprojekt Spontaneous Frameworks zeigt Arbeiten Studierender von Prof. Tina Bara und eingeladener KünstlerInnen und ArchitektInnen aus Tbilisi, und versucht, eine transkulturelle Perspektive auf scheinbar lokales Phänomen der "spontanen Architektur' zu werfen. Drei parallel laufende Ausstellungen an drei verschiedenen Orten verhandeln das Thema durch das Prisma der linguistischen, räumlichen und kulturellen Bedeutungen des Begriffes Übersetzung.

Spontaneity extends above and beyond regulated frameworks and written laws. As a feature it is then perceived as positive when gazed from a distance, and perceived as something authentic and emotional, in other cultures. When one travels in Georgia, so much seems to be characterised by spontaneity. Outcomes of spontaneous action, relate less to long-negotiated plans and concepts, than on the swift reactions of individuals. These outcomes are visible and tangible in architecture, in the world of objects, but also in social relations. 'Spontaneous architecture' as unofficial and crudely erected built structure, is expressed in various forms and characterises the current cityscape of Tbilisi. Kamikaze loggias as extensions of the living space, provisional architectural supports as protection against the collapse of houses, and spontaneous crucifixes, as unauthorised commemorative monuments within the public space, are but a few examples. Are such spontaneous forms and formats of self-organisation responses to economic inadequacies, or, are these types of spontaneity inherent to Georgian cultural identity? Is the Western gaze, the sole definer of this spontaneity as such? And how can 'spontaneous architecture' be translated in art works and exhibition spaces?

The exhibition project Spontaneous Frameworks showcases works of students studying under Prof. Tina Bara and invited artists and architects from Tbilisi in an effort to cast a transcultural perspective on seemingly local phenomena of 'spontaneous architecture'. Three exhibitions will run parallel in three different locations and negotiate the issue through the prism of linguistic, spatial and cultural meanings of the term translation.

After the collapse of the USSR, Soviet urban planning and development in Georgia halted, particularly in the capital, Tbilisi. At the 20th century’s end, in the period of transformations and political and economic crisis, the centralised system of civic government failed, resulting in many micro schemes. Inhabitants began constructing spaces individually; some architectural hybrids originated, becoming spontaneous segments of the city, giving the capital a new look. From the beginning of the 21st century, 'new' building priorities were announced in Tbilisi, resulting in a massive city wide building process. Parts of old buildings disappeared, while other parts re-colored accordingly, had lost their original look and original message. A non-systemic approach has become a new governance system. Ana Chorgolashvili will speak about her ongoing research project Index focusing on Soviet architectural heritage in Tbilisi and its post-Soviet development.

Lost Utopias in Tbilisi. Mosaics from the Soviet period

Artist, curator and former coordinator of artist residency GeoAIR, Sophia Lapiashvili, presents a talk focused on the intensive changes within the public space that have been taking place throughout the last 20 years in Tbilisi, and have given rise to the interest of GeoAIR members in the monumental-decorative mosaics. Unsystematic transformation of urban environment, amateur interventions in forming the image of the city, and façade 'beautifications', have led to destruction of mosaics in Tbilisi’s public spaces. This became the reason behind documenting them, creating the database and online map. Lost Heroes of Tbilisi. Soviet Period Mosaics was a part of the SPACES project, funded by the European Union through the Eastern Partnership Culture Programme.

Pirimze: A Place transforming to a Non-Place
Vortrag/lecture, KV 29/04, 7 pm 
Artist and founder of artist residency GeoAIR, Sophia Tabatadze presents a talk on her three years of research into social and visual changes affecting Pirimze, a six-floor edifice from the Soviet era, built especially to house repair and maintenance services. The theme unfolds to a broader picture and shows what has been happening in Georgia since the Soviet Union’s collapse. One may view Pirimze, a 40 minute experimental documentary film, in the exhibition space of the HGB. Beginning as a curious journey though the labyrinths of Pirimze and observing fascinating skills performed by craftsmen who once worked there, the story moves beyond the façade of the newly renovated business center Pirimze Plaza, which replaced Pirimze, and questions the need and motives for this transformation.

EXHIBITION AND PUBLICATION LUNCH: Lost Heroes of Tbilisi. Soviet Period Mosaics - In The Trade Union Palace of Culture of Georgia, so called "Tsereteli Hall"

(facebook.com/geoair.archidrome) Just for one day different working material were on display, including private archives of authors, documents, sketches, catalogues and photos.

The exhibition included private archive material from Demur Bashaleishvili, Giorgi Chakhava, Saurmag Ghambashidze, Iden Tabidze, Radish Tordia, Kukuri Tsereteli, and photo material by GeoAIR, Zura Dumbadze, Nika Kapanadze, Alexi Kedelashvili and Nino Siradze.

On the same day we launched the publication, which includes research findings and photo documentation of monumental-decorative mosaics from various ‘public’ spaces of Tbilisi.

The intensive changes within public space, that have been taking place during the past 20 years, gave rise to our interest in the monumental-decorative mosaics. Unsystematic transformation of our urban environment, amateur interventions in forming the image of the city and façade ‘beautifications’ have led to the destruction of mosaics in the public spaces of Tbilisi.

It became the reason for documenting them, creating database and the online map, which can be found on the Google maps - Soviet Period Mosaics in Tbilisi

GEOAIR: Visual Storytelling: Tbilisi Migrant Stories (geoair.blogspot.de)

(geoair.blogspot.de) This project is implemented within “Cooking Imaginations: Tbilisi Migrant Stories” project, which addresses the issue of migrants’ lives and integration challenges in Tbilisi. These are people who have come here within the past decade and decided to live in Tbilisi permanently or temporarily. However, cultural exchange and communication within “hosts” and “newcomers” about each others’ culture is very limited, hence, some stereotypes might prevail.
Within “Visual Storytelling: Tbilisi Migrant Stories” we are collaborating with Social Photography Caucasus Foundation, school #43 in Tbilisi - history teacher Nino Abuladze and 6 students from various grades. Schoolchildren participate in workshops, learning basics of doing ethnographic fieldwork and techniques of doing visual documentaries, with the end purpose to use art of photography and power of the image for storytelling. By visual storytelling we mean to produce images as to describe person's everyday realities that many times can not be expressed with words and may easily go unnoticed. Participating schoolchildren will create visual stories about the migrants living in their neighborhoods of Tbilisi and these stories will be presented first time parallel to the public cooking event in October.

Jörg Herold, as a documentary archaeologist (as he refers to himself) researches memories. As a contemporary, purposely he searches for utilizing memories in various mediums: painting, installation, sculpture, film. After travelling to the real and unreal worlds of memories, his installations, films, paintings are created. The function of documentary archaeology is to show the possibilities of memories to the future and underline the conflict between ethical and aesthetic representations.

Jörg Herold has been awarded with various prices, including: Leipziger Volkszeitung, 1999 and Kunstpreis der Stadt Wolfsburg, 2005. He is exhibitied in various museums and art institutions (Museum der Bildende Künste Leipzig, Heydt-Museum Wuppertal, Staatlichen Museum Schwerin, Galerie der Stadt Wolfsburg,Kunstverein Bielefeld). Also, he has participated in numerous international exhibitions, such as: Venice Biennial (1995); Documenta X (1997); exhibition dedicated to 40 years of video art at Leipzig Fine Art Museum; South Korea Seongnam Arts Center and LEEAHN Gallery (2012).

From 1985, Jörg Herold works with Gallery EIGEN + ART, which presents him occasionally in Leipzig and Berlin.

The GeoAIR residency program is a self directed residency program, that offers primarily curators and cultural producers the opportunity to base themselves in Tbilisi and use this location as a starting point to build networks, meet artists, cultural institutions and curators from the Caucasus region, and develop and deepen their knowledge and research of the Caucasus context. In return local artists, curators and organizations will have the opportunity to extend their knowledge about the innovative ways that many international curators are working. GeoAir has designated her residency mainly for curators or cultural producers because it feels that they are most able to affect multiplier effects through exchange and production and are more equipped to use the residency as a platform from which to jump for to instigate future collaborations between the resident and artists and organizations form the Caucasus region. The aim of GeoAIR is to encourage different ways of thinking about and approaching issues of artistic and professional development, dialogue, exchange, and research within the Caucasus context. GeoAIR offers a dynamic residency model designed around tapping into the regional context of the residency. The program encourages the resident to delve into his/her perception of this context and to revisit their perception and question it. This is viewed as mutually benefiting for the curator’s repertoire and professional development in general and for the region’s exposure to new artistic experiences.

Technical information:
GeoAIR assists in the realization, investigation and conception of new productions and research through connecting the resident with the suited organizations, curators, artists, venues and research opportunities in relation to the proposed project. GeoAIR’s flexible platform enables the program and the resident to work with a wide variety of partners on innovative project collaborations. In addition GeoAIR offers a substantial archive that sets out to map the art activity within the Caucasus region, and asks from each resident to contribute to this database. In this archive one will find artists, curators, writers and organizations who have contributed to past and current GeoAIR projects and initiatives and additional information about the GeoAIR network and activities in the Caucasus including catalogues, reviews, artist portfolios, art magazines and other publications. The database reflects the history of people and places that, in the end, define GeoAIR and outlines the potential of the region and its future possibilities.

Studio information:
This program is managed on a not-for-profit basis. Residents will receive their own housing (50qm) and office-style studio (10qm) with access to all GeoAIR facilities including the archive. The program provides residents access to the vast GeoAIR network that includes individuals spanning different disciplines, professions, and regions. GeoAIR provides residents with all the necessary support and connections to help them achieve their proposal and research goals primarily in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. A related community based network can provide professional and personal support to the artists.

Following last year’s VIENNAFAIR The New Contemporary kick-off with a curated section of the VIENNA Quintet program in which Georgia played an important role and many artists came to Vienna, we promised to visit Tibilisi. By the end of May everything was set up for the visit!

After a long layover flight and arrival at 5:00 am at the hotel, I was happy to look out of the hotel window and find a beautiful green landscape surrounding Tbilisi.

Nana, art historian and advisor to the Georgian Pavilion this year, invited me for tea and fresh strawberries at her apartment, which contains a fascinating collection of her husband’s work.

Women definitely rule the Georgian art scene. Dedika filled me in on the history of her gallery and local collector habits. End of May she organized exhibitions at the former Museum of Medicine, where she invited me along for a visit.

Kote is a widely traveled scholar who raised his voice loudly in support of gay rights. We had a cup of tea and read some poetry…

On the next day, Sophia showed me around her GeoAir office and library, which she established over the years about the region. In 2007 she presented at the Georgian pavilion in Venice. Sophia talked me through her recent projects, largely inspired by the wild architecture and construction mushrooming in the city.

Irena invited me over to see part of her collection and explore new artists. She took me around the city to some treasures.

Entering Guga’s home, a similar experience as in many houses before. I saw three levels from outside but was amazed to walk through six. Guga designed most of the cafés and restaurants filled by the art crowd in the city.

Guga showed me around his collection of hand-painted film posters from the 80s, interpretations of the original American version.

Located in the heart of the city, the National Gallery showcased an outstanding exhibition of David Kakabadze.

I was happy to meet the artists group Bouillon just a couple of hours before their departure to Venice!

Xatuna, another example of strong women in the city, introduced me to her artist list.

The headquarters of the Bank of Georgia is an 18-story building on the outskirts of Georgia’s capital city Tbilisi. It opened in 1975 as the Ministry of Highway Construction of the Georgian SSR. After Georgia’s independence, the building was left temporarily unused before being acquired by the Bank of Georgia in 2007, which carried out extensive renovation work on the exterior and interior of the building.

A typical Georgian dinner with Niño and Nato at another restaurant designed by Goga. Borjomi is the perfect medicine for all sorts of problems.

At the Venice Biennale I finally got to see the performance by Bouillon.

ART: Workshop In Performing Art - with Ali Hasanov

Ali Hasanov, born in 1976 in Baku, is an Azerbaijani artist, musician and filmmaker, participant of a number of art projects in Azerbaijan and abroad. He is the pioneer performance artist in Azerbaijan and he is recognized for his contribution to the development of performance art in Azerbaijan. Ali represented Azerbaijan at the 52nd Venice Biennale.

He is also the founder and leader of a musical collective called PG Large Used Project.

Ali Hasanov remains active in various genres such as visual and performance art, video and sound installations, painting and drawing.

On 26.06.2012 / 11.00–1700 will take place his workshop in performing art. For participation please contact us at the end of presentation.

Zum diesjährigen Herbstrundgang möchten wir Sie gern zu unserem Schwerpunkt Georgien einladen. Die Ausstellung wird von ihrer Exzellenz Gabriela von Habsburg, Botschafterin Georgiens in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, feierlich eröffnet. Es werden landestypische Speisen und Getränke gereicht.

Der Rundgang findet wieder an zwei Tagen statt, dem 17. und 18. September, Samstag von 11 bis 21 Uhr und Sonntag von 11 bis 18 Uhr.

We would cordially like to invite you to the Autumn Gallery Tour taking place at the Spinnerei Leipzig. Our exhibition is focused on the country of Georgia. The show will be inaugurated by Her Excellency Gabriela von Habsburg, Ambassador of Georgia to the Federal Republic of Germany. We’ll provide Georgian food and drinks.

As always the gallery tour takes place on two days, the 17th and the 18th of September, on Saturday from 11am until 9pm and on Sunday from 11am until 6 pm.

The GeoAIR opened it's residency program in January 2010. This is a self directed residency program, that offers primarily curators and culture producers the opportunity to base themselves in Tbilisi, Georgia and use this location as a starting point to build networks, meet artists, cultural institutions and curators from the Caucasus region, and develop and deepen their knowledge and research of the Caucasus context. In return local artists, curators and organizations will have the opportunity to extend their knowledge about the innovative ways that many international curators are working. GeoAIR has designated her residency mainly for curators or cultural producers because it feels that they are most able to affect multiplier effects through exchange and production and are more equipped to use the residency as a platform from which to jump for to instigate future collaborations between the resident and artists and organizations form the Caucasus region.

Residents are expected to make at least one public presentation of their work or related topic for Georgia public.

* Pelin Tan is a sociologist and art historian. She was a researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences, Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul (2001-2010). Tan is a research fellow in Spring 2011 at the ACT (Art, Culture, and Technology) program of the Department of Architecture – School of Architecture and Planning, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Previously she was a guest professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Architecture and Urban Research MA Program, Nuremberg (2008); and guest lecturer at the History of Art Departments at the Technical University, Berlin (2006–2007) and Trier University, Trier (2004). Tan is currently working on the publication Unconditional Hospitality and Architecture (forthcoming) and co-edited (with Sezgin Boynik) the publication Güncel Sanatta Kamusal Alan Tartışmaları [Public Space Discussion in Contemporary Art] (2007). She is also editor of Muhtelif contemporary art magazine, and has contributed to numerous publications including: Becoming Istanbul, An Encyclopedia (2008); When Things Cast No Shadow (catalog, 5th Berlin Biennale) (2008); Megastructure Reloaded (2008); and Contemporary Art In Turkey: 1986–2006 (2007).

She is a member of the curatioral advisory board of DEPO Istanbul. Tan curated several research-based projects and exhibitions that are consisting of issues in contemporary art: Urban localities and social conflict, Alternative education formats, Institutional criticism, Social surplus value and dissemination. For 2011, Tan is working on a research project of artist run-spaces in Asia and labor; editing a special issue on social surplus, freelance teaching and curating Knut Asdam Solo show (June, DEPO).

ARTISTS: Four Georgian Artists 2011 AT LIA in Germany (Leipzig International Art - liap.eu)

I am very glad that I can expecting especially for a longer time four georgian artists in my hometown in the coming year 2011. This surprise for me came not abrubt ... Sure I know some people which are involved in the organisation like the curators Anna-Louise Kratzsch and Nini Palavandashvili.
For me it is a great feeling ... than some years ago I dreamed about that but I haven't a gallery or worked effectively in the art scene and I had not serious contacts for the realizing such a productive process with georgian artist. But my long true readers know my interests for the cultural scene from Georgia.

Okay ... 2005 we invited Georgian Artists for a Festival to Leipzig (OFF Europa, former Manöver-Festival). This was my first step to work with georgian artists. 2007 my friend Knut Geißler and me realised a small festival with artists from the area around the Black Sea. Sure I asked my friend and colleague whether we can invite one or two persons from Georgia again for this festival in the year 2007.

And than I invited the performer Nadia Tsulukidze and the curator Nini Palavandishvili (GeoAir - Collaborative Cultural Projects & Archidrome) for coming to Leipzig. Together with Nini Palavandishvili we opened a show in two places for georgian artists. Yeh ... we had no time, no budget ... thruthful we made in a short time an exhibition on the wall. Sure it would have been better ... but some georgian artists came there ... we had an nice time together. And one of my dreams would be truth: Nini Palavandishvili - she is a very active person - had known some german people in this time and otherwise she was good connected here in Germany before ... and nevertheless last year she had a fund for easteuropean curators on the GfZK in Leipzig. 2011 she will opening a professional organized exhibition with georgian artists there.



And the second surprise for me is: Four georgians will stay finaly in Anna-Louise Kratzsch Resistance (LIA) for artists in the next year: Sophia Lapiashvili, Tamar Botchorishvili, Luiza Laperadze and Guram Tsibakhashvili . With three artists from this group I had contact in the former times. I am very glad to spend time with this people here in Germany and not only in Georgia.

Anna-Louise Kratzsch was in a GeoAIR Residency in Tbilisi during October 2-23. During her residency at GeoAIR Anna-Louise Kratzsch was also participating in TRANSRELATION - International Symposium of Contemporary Arts Tbilisi, organized in cooperation with Goethe Institute Georgia and “Artisterum” 3rd Tbilisi International Contemporary Art Exhibition and Art Events.

Before this project I told my friend Anna-Louise Kratzsch about our tripp (the german artist Jörg Herold and me) to the southcaucasian area. She knows something about Georgia from our narratives. And nevertheless Nini and Anna came together and invited eachother ... Anna-Louise Kratzsch was in Tbilisi some weeks ago. And now: Georgian Artists will coming to Leipzig!!

Sophia Lapiashvili ... was born in Tbilisi in 1977. She graduated from the faculty of fine art history and theory in 2000 Tbilisi State Academy of Art. In 1997 Sophia moved to Germany were she studied at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg until 2001. During her time in Germany she took a private photo class with Martin Geier. In 2004 she took part in an art curator workshop called „Grenzenlos Vorschen“ Switzerland. Furthermore, in 2006 she joined the Internationale curatorial workshop by bb4 (von Menschen und Maeusen) in Berlin.

Luiza Laperadze ... was born in Tkibuli, Georgia in 1972. She is a graduate of the Tbilisi State Academy of Art and has gained her full qualification as a painter at the Faculty of Fine Art.

Guram Tsibakhashvili ... was born 1960 in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia. In 1982 he graduated from Tbilisi State University. 1990-1994 he taught theory of photography at the Tbilisi State University. Since 1988 he has been working for Georgian newspapers and magazines as a photographer. In 2000 he co-founded the Caucasian Center for Cultural Development and in 2007 the Tbilisi Photographer House. In 2007 he was chief editor of FOTO Amarta magazine.
