Transformations of Sacred Spaces, Pilgrimages and Conceptions of Hybridity in the Post-Soviet Caucasus

Bewilligung: 18.06.2012 Laufzeit: 3 Jahre

The Global Food Crisis - Impact on Wheat Markets and Trade in the Caucasus and Central Asia and the Role of Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine

Bewilligung: 23.03.2012 Laufzeit:

The project investigates wheat markets in the Caucasus and Central Asia and the major supplier countries of this region, namely Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine (KRU) against the background of the ongoing global food crisis. Long-term rising prices and increasing price volatility on the world markets for agricultural raw materials have considerably affected the countries in Central Asia and the Caucasus. However, up until today there is nearly no empirical evidence on how wheat markets in this region work and how prices are formed. The present research project aims to close this research gap. Three different but closely connected working groups will carry out empirical analyses on price transmission and price volatility, structure of the wheat supply chains, and wheat trade patterns and relationships. The project consortium consists of 9 research institutions, most of them located in Central Asia and the Caucasus. A group of 6 PhD students coming predominantly from the countries under study is involved in the international research team.

Early pleistocene environmental changes in Southern Caucasus - reconstruction of climate and vegetation development in Armenia and Georgia at the time of early human expansion into Eurasia (extension)

Bewilligung: 10.01.2012 Laufzeit: 2 Jahre

This project aims to understand the Early Pleistocene local environments in Southern Caucasus as prerequisites for the first appearance of humans in this area. It focuses on vegetation and climate reconstructions based on plant fossils in an area and for a time span (2 to 1 Ma) known to be inhabited by early humans. Furthermore, GIS analyses will provide a spatial interpretation of the data. By comparing short-term vegetation changes at different climatic events and in different regions, it will be possible to understand the mechanisms of climatic influence on the local vegetation, to "translate" the global climatic signal to the local setting, and to extrapolate it into phases without fossil record. Therefore, three regions are chosen for comparison and correlation; southern Armenian highland, southern Georgian highland, and western Georgian lowland. By connecting the obtained vegetation and climate data (based on plant fossils) with other available environmental information (based on mammals, insects, geology, geography) to a comprehensive landscape reconstruction, this project aims to identify temporal and spatial corridors of landscape appropriate for early human presence during the Early Pleistocene in Southern Caucasus.
