PHOTOGRAPHY: Khevsurs. By Archil Kikodze. (georgianphotographers.com)

(georgianphotographers.com) Khevsureti is a mountain province located between the northern and southern chains of the Eastern Caucasus. The particular cultural history of this people has long held the interests of scholars and poets. Traditional livelihoods and religious practices, rooted in pagan belief systems, have added to the mythology of the Khevsurs.

This remote region, sparsely populated due to relocation schemes under Soviet rule, presents a harsh life for its inhabitants. Isolated in winter, and exposed to the wildness that surrounds them, these strong people bear the scars of their history and daily existence.
