For its 8th edition, Tbilisi Photo Festival partners with AtlasGlobal air company to hold in July its Original Masterclass workshops with Yuri Kozyrev/Noor and Justyna Mielnikiewicz - two internationally-acclaimed photographers! Both of them share keen ability to communicate the profound knowledge of photography and are intimately familiar with Georgia.

The masterclasses will be held in the remote village of Shenako, 2000 meters high in the Greater Caucasus mountain range. This awe-inspiring hamlet of shepherds and horsemen was chosen for its breathtaking landscape and its photographic legacy in the name of Shalva Alkhanaidze, whose brilliant mid-20th century images of Tushetian life reveal a world of raw passion and somber frankness.

The Masterclass aims both to help photographers develop a personal photographic language and to discover Georgia by exploring one of its most enchanting regions.

AUSSTELLUNG: "Vom Zauber der Realität" eröffnet - Kunstwerke von Rusudan Khizanishvili und Brigitte J. Schaider im Kunsthaus Summerau. Von Olaf E. Jahnke (schwaebische.de)

(schwaebische.de) Rusudan Khizanishvili, und Brigitte J. Schaider haben am Freitag zur Vernissage nach Summerau geladen und etliche Kunstinteressierte sind gekommen. Sie haben sich mit Zauberei und Musik eingestimmt, ein humorvolles Grußwort gab’s von Hans Peter Vollmer.

Khizanishvili ist aus New York angereist und sagt zu ihrer Kunst: „Die Leinwand ist eine Verbindung zu einer phantastischen Welt, in der alle Menschen, Tiere, Pflanzen und Gegenstände Wesen sind.“ Die Georgierin hat 21 Gemälde mitgebracht, die mit kräftigen Farben, vielschichtiger Darstellung, fabelhaften Tierwesen und abstrakter Realität beeindrucken. „Ob Venedig, Wien, New York – oder Summerau, ich schätze die unterschiedlichen Begegnungen, das Interesse an meiner Kunst.“ Zuhause in Tiflis heiße es dann wieder malen, malen, malen. Sehenswert ist nicht nur die Kunst der Georgierin – auch Schaider, die inzwischen ebenfalls international ausstellt, zeigt vielschichtige Darstellungen zum Thema Realität ganz unterschiedlicher künstlerischer Genres.

Die Ausstellung ist bis zum 5. Juni zu sehen und ist samstags, sonn- und feiertags von 11 bis 16 Uhr geöffnet.

Maka Batiashvili's exuberant work depicts scenes from the everyday. Through the subject matter, Batiashvili poses questions around the existential issues of life and death. In her work the everyday life resembles a playground, where various scenes are being performed. Ostensibly unmediated figures and the intense color scheme in Batiashvili's work share stylistic tendencies with the early modernist painting traditions of Georgia and Europe. Batiashvili's practice is an interesting cross between the traditional and the contemporary painting.

Das Naghash Ensemble besteht neben dem Komponisten John Hodian am Flügel aus drei armenischen Sängerinnen sowie drei Instrumentalisten auf Duduk, Oud und Dhol. Sie präsentieren die von Hodian erstmals vertonten Gedichte des mittelalterlichen armenischen Priesters Mkrtich Naghash. In den »Songs of Exile« verbinden sich Folk und Klassik zu einer Musik, die fremd und zugleich vertraut klingt, irdisch und wie nicht von dieser Welt.

Im 15. Jahrhundert verfasste der armenische Priester Mkrtich Naghash bewegende Gedichte über das Leben im Exil und die Beziehung des Menschen zu Gott. Über fünf Jahrhunderte später stößt der armenisch-amerikanische Komponist John Hodian auf ein Fragment dieser Texte und weiß: Er hat gefunden, was er suchte! Als Nachkomme von Überlebenden des Genozids an den Armeniern 1915 liest er in Naghashs Texten auch seine eigene Heimatlosigkeit: „Diese Worte sprangen mir aus dem Text entgegen, direkt in meine Seele.“

Mit der Stimme der armenischen Sängerin Hasmik Baghdasaryan im Ohr, beginnt er, die »Songs of Exile« zu komponieren. In seinen Stücken treffen formale Klavierelemente auf erdige Klänge der armenischen Volksinstrumente Duduk, Oud und Dhol. Eigens um diese Kompositionen aufzuführen, gründete sich das Ensemble. Es erweckt die mittelalterlichen armenischen Gedichte, Klagen und Beschwörungen zu einem neuem Leben.

Surrounded by 5,000-meter high mountains, the South Caucasus was a strategic point tying together all directions of the Silk Road. Home to 50 ethnic groups, the region is a cultural treasure trove of unique ethnic music, religious architecture, wines, and so on. It has also been invaded by the Roman, Mongol, and Ottoman empires. Wars still rage even now, and over one million people have become refugees. The region is truly representative of both the blessings and the historical calamities brought on by the Silk Road. This leg of the journey will take you to three countries -- Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia -- countries that have long fostered unique cultures tempered by the flames of war.

Launched in 1980, NHK's renowned Silk Road series was the first foreign TV program allowed to film Silk Road inside communist China. The series sparked enormous interest. A quarter of a century later, NHK re-visits Silk Road with high-definition cameras, and continues further through Central and West Asia.

(agenda.ge) Filmmaker Giorgi Tsilosani has been honoured for his work on the 2015 short film The Preparation after the director received the Best Directing award from the Globe International Silent Film Festival in the United States last week.
Promoted as one of the few international cinema occasions focusing on silent film, the festival ran at the Michigan State University.
The results of the festival’s competition program were announced on April 11, with Tsilosani’s work revealed among seven prize-winning submissions.
Shot in 2015 in the western Georgia’s Cholobargi village, The Preparation casts actors in a portrait of a family preparing for the death of its elder member.
The production was awarded with Best Short Film at the International Bosphorus Film Festival in Turkey and received Special Jury Prize at the Batumi International Art-House Film Festival in Georgia.
The Preparation was also shown at the Eastern Neighbours Film Festival in the Netherlands, with organisers praising it as an "exciting, wonderfully shot film”.

Tsilosani worked on the short as director and screenwriter, with his film produced by Tbilisi-based Millimeter Film studio with support from the Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film Georgia State University.
The Preparation was Tsilosani's 2015 graduation work from the University.

Founded in 2015, the Globe International Silent Film Festival is held in a "different academic environment around the world every year”.








Short film made by Georgian director Giorgi Tsilosani in 2015. Film is about family who prepares for death of one of their members. Film is made with support of studio Millimeter film and Shota rustaveli theatre and film Georgia state university. This is independent project but for director it was also graduation film. Film was made in Georgia, village Cholobargi.

This is an interesting look but one that I cannot say I've shared in. I've spent over three years living among Adjarians and spending much time in the highlands and villages of Xulo. There is a dark dignity to the photos presented here, and the people do have this dignity but I do not feel that there is the darkness illustrated here. I do not imply darkness as a mood or feeling, only the lens through which the photographer chose to portray her subjects. I have always found the highlanders to be amazingly open and joyous. I've spent a few Shuamtoba festivals at Beshumi and Goderdzi. They are riots of color, wrestling, horse racing, dance, and song. Marriages are conducted before the community and drunken fights are pretty common. The days leading up to the festivals were filled with merriment and obscene amounts of drinking. I've partook. Remember these are Muslim populations. The idea/s that we know anything about the Muslim world in Adjara is correct in the photographer/author's opening assessment. We do not know much about it. What we think we know about the populations of Adjara are most likely mistaken and wrought with unwarranted prejudices. One thing mentioned in the article and I find a truism is that the households would fall apart without the women managing them and they are present at the supras but are only periphery participants. Very cool photo series presented on Tako's blog. I found the smaller village Shuamtoba festival very interesting.

Natalia Antelava is an award-winning journalist and a co-founder of Coda Story, a web platform for covering crises. She started her career freelancing in West Africa but has since been BBC's resident correspondent in the Caucasus, Central Asia, Middle East, Washington DC and most recently India. She has reported undercover from Burma, Yemen and Uzbekistan, and her investigations into human rights abuses in Central Asia, Iraq and the United States have won a number of awards.

(tedxtbilisi.com) John Wurdeman discusses his life's journey seeking out traditional folk music, dance and ways of life and argues that children of more "closed" cultures have more freedom of expression, and in the "freer" world often creativity is limited.

John Wurdeman was born in 1975 into a family of artists in Santa Fe, New Mexico and is himself an artist and painter. He studied painting at the Maryland Institute of Art in 1991 and completed his graduate studies in painting at the Surikov Institute in Moscow in 1998. His works have been exhibited worldwide and form part of multiple museum collections.

John is also an avid ethnographer and has conducted fieldwork in Georgia, collecting Georgian folk music and songs, ceramics, carpets and kilns since 1995. He has given lectures on Georgian ethnography at Princeton, Yale, Cornell, and other prestigious educational institutions.

In 2007, John co-founded Pheasants Tears, a boutique winery focused on traditional Georgian grape varietals and qvevri wine-making methods. His wines are currently available in 10 countries and have become popular in Georgia as well. He also started a side wine tourism business, sharing his love for Georgian wine, food, and music with others.

(boehlau-verlag.com) Im Zuge von Weltgeschichtsschreibung, Transnationalisierungsforschung und „neuen“ Area Studies ist die im deutschsprachigen Raum vertretene historische Teildisziplin Osteuropäische Geschichte zum einen unter Legitimationszwang geraten, zum anderen aber von eben diesen global orientierten Forschungsrichtungen als paradigmatischer Prototyp entdeckt worden. Im Kontext von Bezugsrahmen wie „Eurasien“ und „zweiter Welt“, ja selbst „Europa“ oder „nördliche Hemisphäre“, ist das Erkenntnispotential der seit hundert Jahren gut etablierten historischen Osteuropaforschung samt ihren Foci auf Ostmitteleuropa, Südosteuropa, Nordosteuropa und den ostslavischen Raum, aber auch auf den Kaukasus und Zentralasien sowie bezüglich der Verflechtung mit anderen Weltregionen, zum einen erkannt wie es zum anderen genutzt wird. Dies gilt nicht zuletzt für die in der besagten Teildisziplin entwickelte Konzeption der Geschichtsregion, welche mittlerweile nicht nur von anderen Europahistorikern, sondern auch von Vertretern weiterer historischer Disziplinen – historische Soziologie, Zivilisationsgeschichtsschreibung, Kunstgeschichtsforschung, Literaturgeschichte, Anthropogeographie u. a. – kreativ adaptiert wird.

Der Band belegt sowohl die Sinnhaftigkeit der geschichtsregionalen Konzeption „östliches Europa“ (samt ihren Untergliederungen) im intraregionalen Kontext als auch deren Konstituierung durch die Interaktion mit angrenzenden historischen Meso-Regionen.

(www.elisso-bolkvadze.com) Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, in the family of poets and writers, Elisso Bolkvadze began her musical study at the early age of four and performed her first concert with orchestra attheage of seven.

She’s a musician with numerous talents with an outstanding sensibility and brilliant virtuosity. As described by legendary Maestro Zubin Mehta, she is a pianist with a "complete control over the instrument”.

A superstar in her country of birth, prize winner of many international piano world competitions, Elisso Bolkvadze was awarded with "The Medal of Georgian Government” – one of the most prestigious national honors.

The Georgian artist has established herself as a vivid cultural heritage protector and became UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2015.

Bolkvadze is actively engaged in charity actions in order to help young talents and founded Charity Foundation "Lyra” in 2013, in her homeland Georgia.

She began her piano studies at the local Conservatory and continued in Moscow Conservatory with Tatiana Nikolaeva.

Her musical career and development as an artist was greatly influenced by musician and Doctor of Philosophy, Michel Sogny and his unique Piano Method.

Her performance highlights have included collaborations with: Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Santa Fe Festival Orchestra, Lithuanian National Orchestra, National Philharmonic of Ukraine and Lviv, Innsbruck Symphony Orchestra, TheGewandhaus Orchestra, France National Orchestra, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Krakow Philharmonic, Orchestre Colonne, United Nations Symphony Orchestra, Georgian Opera State Orchestra, Qatar Philharmonic.

She also tours with recital concerts in Asia, America and Europe, playing Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Debussy, Prokofiev and Chopin. As an Artist of Distinction, she will perform Mozart piano concerto N21 for the season opening in Maumelle Performing Art Center in USA with Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and Philip Mann as a conductor.

She recorded several albums for Sony BMG and Cascavelle Lable, performing piano concertos by Beethoven, Rachmaninoff and Liszt.

In 2015 Bolkvadze released an album "Prokofiev, Schubert” with Lable Audite that had a great critical acclaim and granted the title «Pianist Maestro».

As an artist actively engaged in cultural and human rights actions, Elisso Bolkvadze gave a charity concert in collaboration with the Embassy of Georgia, in March 2014 at Victoria Hall Geneva, She played Saint-Saens piano concerto N2 with the United Nations Orchestra for supporting Georgian children that have suffered from war. As well as series of charity concerts in Georgia in order to help individual patients and children affected by cancer.

In 2013 she founded Batumi International Music Festival on the shore of the Black Sea. It’s an important cultural highlight in Georgia, where artists of different cultures gather to create musical excellence. One of the main inspirations of the festival is to broaden the power of cultural dialogue, unify people around high values and become one of the important bridges of building peace around the world.

For her outstanding contribution to the development of culture and personal commitment to cultural exchanges between France and Georgia, Elisso Bolkvadze received the distinction of Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by French Republic in October 2015.
